Firefighters tackle apartment fire in Greencastle Thursday
An electrical malfunction has been ruled in a fire that occurred at an apartment complex near downtown Greencastle on Thursday.
Multiple local fire departments were dispatched on a box alarm by about 10:38 a.m. for a structure fire at 409 E. Franklin St. As such, it was advised that smoke was showing.
The Greencastle Fire Department rolled its two engines as well as its aerial truck. Meanwhile, the Cloverdale Township, Fillmore and Madison Township volunteer fire departments each responded with an engine and manpower.
It was determined that the fire started behind a wall on the first floor. It then extended into the floor joist connecting two apartments.
Greencastle Fire Asst. Chief Rob Frank said the majority of fire damage was contained to the westernmost bottom apartment, but that the two above apartments were smoke-damaged.
The fire was ruled as under control by 11:05 a.m. Meanwhile, firefighters performed overhaul on the top two apartments.
The area of Franklin Street from Locust Street to Paradise Lane was shut down until about 12:20 p.m.
The Greencastle Police Department, Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, Indiana State Police, Putnam County EMS and the American Red Cross, as well as Duke Energy, were also at the scene. Greencastle Utilities also assisted.
Meanwhile, Bainbridge and Reelsville volunteers covered Greencastle Fire’s station.
No injuries to the residents or to emergency personnel have been reported. However, occupants in the top apartments were displaced.
While the building is not considered a total loss, total damages are estimated at about $100,000.
