K-9 Boone to replace Cain as Deputy Lee’s partner

A new K-9 deputy could prove to be a Boone to the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office.

On Tuesday, Kyle Lee introduced new K-9 partner Boone, a three-year-old German shepherd, to the Putnam County Commissioners during their first meeting of 2022.

The introduction of Boone was coupled with the announcement that Lee’s longtime partner Cain is being retired.

“Regrettably, Cain, who came over with Kyle Lee from Greencastle Police Department, is needing to move over to retirement sooner than we wanted,” Chief Deputy Matt Demmings said.

Cain, now 9-1/2 years old, has served with Lee since 2016, when Lee was still an officer with GPD. Lee was hired by PCSO in 2019, and the City of Greencastle subsequently signed over ownership of the dog to the county.

Tuesday’s requests from PCSO were also transfers of ownership, with Boone set to transfer from Lee’s possession to the county (though Lee will remain his handler and caretaker) and Cain to transfer from the county to Lee.

“Thank you kindly,” Commissioner Rick Woodall said. “We appreciate the donation.”

The Commissioners unanimously approved taking ownership of Boone, but the transfer of Cain to Lee is not quite final.

County Attorney Jim Ensley believes there is some sort of specific insurance that needs to be taken out regarding Cain in case there are ever any liablity issues to which the county might be named.

The Commissioners approved the retirement agreement for Cain, contingent upon review by the county’s insurance provder.

Boone received police certification from VonBernd K-9 Training Center, where Cain and other area police dogs were certified.

The new officer is certified in apprehension and narcotics.

In other dog-related news, Demings reported that the K-9 officer memorial is now in place at the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, a process more than a year in the making.

“It came out just exactly like the plan,” Demmings said. “We really like it, and it looks good.”

  • Welcome, canine Boone. Be safe out there.

  • Using a police dog to find somebody or sniff for drugs is a good thing, but using the dog to bite someone and tear their flesh causing permanent scars and possible permanent injuries is barbaric and inhumane, and needs to done away with. I know, we're not supposed to care because it's the bad guys getting bitten. In Indy at least, most of the time it's low level non-violent crimes that law enforcement feel necessary to unleash the dogs on. Apparently, on occasion they bite innocent bystanders. Last year the Indystar had a story on Indianapolis pd's use of police dogs that won a Pulitzer prize, it said Indy had the highest rate by far of police dog bites in America among large cities! Yikes!

    The end is nigh!

Yet again, I find myself in accord with Raker.

I have seen first hand (at the last Grateful Dead at Deer Creek) the injudicious use of K-9s and I have read too many stories about K-9s biting innocents.

Then there is the whole lopsided criminal aspects: if a cop shoots/kills a family pet there is no repercussions...however, if someone just hits/kicks a police dog it is treated the same as assault on a police officer. So a dog is just an animal unless it belongs to a law enforcement agency, then it is on par with a human.

There is something very wrong with that.

  • Boy, everyone who is normally at loggerheads on here seems to be in agreement. I have no problem with drug detection, as long as it’s backed up by real evidence, tracking lost people or escaped convicts, for example. But to release a dog for low level offenses to have the dog maim someone is beyond where we should be. That being said, I know of no reports of Cain maiming someone. Educate me if I’m wrong here. Let’s keep all of this in context.

  • I don't expect everyone to jump up and agree with me, but like they say, it ain't like what you see on TV. What's surprising is dreadpirateroberts going to a Grateful Dead concert. LOL were you selling fake acid on shakedown street, is that why? But not to joke too much on this topic, because I think it cheapens the point I was making.

Koios, who is obviously 'pro' dogs biting people, is here once again to be the devil's advocate. Here's some context: I noticed recently when scrolling through sheriff's department old facebook posts, if I'm remembering correctly, there was a post with photos of the dog biting someone's arm with the padding, like for a demonstration. That leads me to believe not only is their dog trained to do that, but that it is used. Imagine a German shepherd chomping down on your arm or leg. Its teeth are going to puncture your skin, ripping it open, cutting into your muscle, and possibly damaging tendons, nerves and ligaments. At the very least you're gonna end up with some stitches and some permanent scarring. Becoming permanently disfigured or disabled by a police dog just sounds like cruel and unusual punishment to me.

How would you even know if that dog bit somebody and seriously injured them? Unless they filed a lawsuit or somehow had their story reported in the news like in the Indystar article? You really think there's no context in my comment to this police dog? I disagree. I would imagine all these law enforcement dogs and handlers get their training from the same places as the ones in indy, just saying.

And as far as the drug sniffing part, I might have to take back my previous statement because you realize, eventually the entire country is going to legalize marijuana, so the only drugs the dogs will be searching for are the more serious ones like meth, heroin and cocaine. I'm not sure, but I think it's harder to detect an odor of those for humans compared to weed. So using a canine to sniff for drugs on a regular traffic stop at that point seems like it would mostly just be a fishing expedition, even if the driver had prior drug arrests. So if we're then talking about the overall war on drugs, it makes me real interested to see what happens in Oregon in the next few years since they have completely decriminalized all drugs for personal use, and have instead decided to treat drug addiction as a public health issue instead of a criminal one. Of course, if it turns out to be a better solution to dealing with drug use in society, based on history Indiana almost surely be one of the dead last states to get on board.

  • I have a close friend who's spouse is a State Investigator in Oregon. That person has real experience and information on what is happening there in regards to drug use and crime.

That person experiences it on a daily level and the observations and experience shared is quite alarming.

  • Raker, how did you get the idea that I’m pro dog biting people from my post?

Does anyone else find it interesting that the article announcing Rep. Baird filing his re-election papers has comments blocked?

I know he hates socialism and communism, we all do. Did he stand up against the attempt to steal an election? He did not. Did he stand up against the January 6 events? He did not. Does he love this country or does he love his political party and the power it bestows him more? That is the question. And that question needs to be asked of both sides of the political aisle. Especially now.

  • It's like a free political ad for him. Its a crock they blocked paying customers from commenting. Maybe he paid for the ad? Either way, total BS.

  • I'm going to join RAKER, again, and DPR in stating my opposition to the barbaric use of attack canines when it is unwarranted. I kind of wish KOIOS would have a change of heart and get on board.

I'd also like to add my opinion that a police dog is only as good as his handler, and I believe K9 Boone is in wonderful hands and will be an excellent addition to the GPD.

  • Most of what government does could be labeled as socialism. Baird wants to scare everyone into thinking communism and socialism are the same thing, and then call everything democrats want to do "socialism".

I would like to thank everyone lately for agreeing with me, and also say that I agree with your agreement

The banner has been disabling comments on articles related to elections for awhile, because anonymous people arguing about politics is a pet peeve of someone in charge there. Or else they have their own political biases, we'll never know.

  • I said GPD. Sorry. I meant the sheriff's office. Apologies.

POSH - How is the depression level not that McDonalds doesn't have Holiday Pies? I know I'm on the struggle bus...

  • RSOTS, thanks for asking, but I've never suffered from a lack of tasty treats, obviously, and if the menu at MacDonald's ever comes up short, which it won't, I can always squeeze in the car and head toward Greencastle. And if worse comes to worse, I'm a cuisine survivalist; there are always a couple of emergency pies in the fridge and seven layer cookies in the freezer to keep me going in a crisis.
