Roachdale will begin accepting bids from contractors for downtown roadwork, the majority of which was paid for by the Community Crossings grant awarded in the second round of funding last year by the Indiana Department of Transportation.

The grant will cover 75 percent of the total cost of the project — an estimated $326,153 — spanning the area along Washington Street from the railroad crossing to Meridian St on the east.

Some of the work to be done will include sidewalk replacement, new curbing and asphalt repaving.

As of now, Roachdale is on the homestretch of its latest Community Crossings project with work set to begin this spring after bids are reviewed and contracts awarded.

The Town Council announced on Wednesday during its monthly meeting that it will be officially advertising the bidding process this Friday, Jan., 21 and again on Friday, Jan., 28.

Town Attorney David Peebles, alongside engineers, will be reviewing proposals and making their recommendations at the next town council meeting, scheduled for Feb. 16.

In other business:

• The Roachdale Utility Dept. announced that the water softener in its treatment plant is no longer working, resulting in the removal of fluoride from the town’s water supply.

The Council stated that it will be informing the State Department of Health, but that it would like to do more research on the matter before determining to fix the malfunctioning piece of equipment or not.

Utility workers said that they can bypass the water softener until a final decision is made.

• The Town Council tabled discussion on its upcoming water/wastewater projects in favor of a separate meeting dedicated entirely to this subject.

• Roachdale will sell one of its police cars deemed “surplus” to the Town of Bainbridge for $7,200.
