Mary Edna Cummings, 77, of Fillmore passed away peacefully on Sunday, Jan. 23, 2022.

Mary was born on May 19, 1944 and was the second of four children of Clarence Cleon and Rosetta Alice (Clark) Cummings.

Mary spent her childhood years in the countryside near Belle Union and graduated in 1962 from Belle Union High School, where she played trombone in the marching band.

Mary worked for many years at the Putnamville Correctional Facility. She also worked as a cook at DePauw University and then Putnam County Hospital, from which she retired after many years of service.

Mary was an avid creator and especially enjoyed cooking for her friends and family. Her specialty was custom-decorated cakes, which adorned many birthday parties and other celebrations of her loved ones.

She cared for her family dearly, spending many weekends traveling with her mother to spend time catching up with her many nephews, nieces, aunts, uncles and cousins. These trips were filled with hours of watching little league baseball, playing cards and dice, and sharing opinions on all of the latest storylines of her favorite soap operas.

Mary is survived by her brother, Allan (Pamela) Cummings of Fillmore; her brother-in-law, Byron Lewellen of Crawfordsville; nieces Candice (Larry) Leclercq and Mindy Lewellen of Crawfordsville; nephew Paul (Dana) Cummings of Franklin, nephew Leslie Cummings of Clayton and nephew Christopher (Alexis) Cummings of Carmel; eight great-nieces, four great-nephews, and many other family members with whom she was very close.

She is preceded in death by her parents, sister Joan Lewellen, brother Michael Cummings, and several aunts and uncles.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 28 at Bittles and Hurt Funeral Home, Greencastle. Visitation will be held one hour prior to time of service at the funeral home.

Mary will be laid to rest at Cloverdale Cemetery next to her parents.
