Winter Storm Watch out for Wednesday-Thursday
While Putnam County has totaled less than three inches of snow for the entire winter to date, that appears about to change.
As the calendar flips over to February, it appears that winter will visit the Putnam County area and west-central Indiana in earnest or at least enough for a Winter Storm Watch to be issued.
The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch for Putnam, Hendricks, Vigo, Clay, Owen, Morgan, Marion, Johnson, Shelby, Rush, Sullivan, Hancock, Henry, Delaware and Randolph counties in Indiana.
The Winter Storm Watch will remain in effect from Wednesday evening of Groundhog’s Day through late Thursday night with heavy mixed precipitation possible.
As tends to often happen, the Interstate 70 corridor appears to be the dividing line with areas north of I-70, like Greencastle, expected to see the most snowfall under the present path of the storm. Areas immediately along I-70 could see the most ice accumulation under the current forecast, while south of Cloverdale, the precipitation could be all rain.
Total snow accumulations in excess of four inches and ice accumulations up to one-tenth of an inch are possible across portions of west-central, central, east-central and southwest Indiana.
The affected area includes the cities of Greencastle, Plainfield, Brownsburg, Danville, Brazil, Spencer, Gosport, Martinsville, Mooresville, Indianapolis, Terre Haute, Greenwood, Franklin, Greenfield, New Castle, Shelbyville, Rushville, Sullivan, Carlisle, Shelburn, Muncie, Winchester and Farmersburg.
Travel could be very difficult as hazardous conditions could impact the morning or evening commute.
Authorities stress that some uncertainty remains on the path of the storm which could impact precipitation types and amounts.
