County gears up for impending winter storm
With morning rain projected to turn to sleet and ice, then more than a day's worth of snow predicted to follow, Putnam County and much of Indiana is preparing for the first winter storm of the 2021-22 season.
All four Putnam County school corporations plus Area 30 Career Center called off in-person school on Wednesday, as the afternoon commute is projected to be treacherous.
The latest prediction from the National Weather Service is for a brief period of sleet and freezing rain followed by an expected heavy snow.
Ice accumulations are likely to only be a light glaze, while the snow could be in excess of 7 inches.
Though temperatures remained above freezing as of 8:30 a.m., he Winter Storm Warning was already in effect and set to last until 1 a.m. Friday.
Travel could be very difficult to impossible, NWS advised. Patchy blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility. The hazardous conditions could impact morning or evening commutes.
For those who must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food and water in the vehicle in case of an emergency.
