With morning rain projected to turn to sleet and ice, then more than a day's worth of snow predicted to follow, Putnam County and much of Indiana is preparing for the first winter storm of the 2021-22 season.

All four Putnam County school corporations plus Area 30 Career Center called off in-person school on Wednesday, as the afternoon commute is projected to be treacherous.

The latest prediction from the National Weather Service is for a brief period of sleet and freezing rain followed by an expected heavy snow.

Ice accumulations are likely to only be a light glaze, while the snow could be in excess of 7 inches.

Though temperatures remained above freezing as of 8:30 a.m., he Winter Storm Warning was already in effect and set to last until 1 a.m. Friday.

Travel could be very difficult to impossible, NWS advised. Patchy blowing snow could significantly reduce visibility. The hazardous conditions could impact morning or evening commutes.

For those who must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food and water in the vehicle in case of an emergency.

The latest road conditions for Indiana can be obtained by calling 1-800-261-7623.

The rain was drastically undersold in the forecasts... We wound up with about 1.25" worth with it still spitting some.

  • Whatever was predicted as snow came as rain. With the usual 1:10 ratio, we would have 12.5" snow by now. Be grateful.

Um, no. Only I decide what to be grateful for. Rain isn't it.

  • Still plenty of snow yet to come. The rain was predicted and now the snow will definitely come overnight and all day Thursday.

Not saying I want snow, either. It's just that you can shovel snow... But when every news outlet acts like we'll be pummeled with some sort of "snowmagedden" only to barely break a quarter-inch once it finally falls after receiving almost 2" worth of rain beforehand is about as frustrating as it gets. To even come close to having an idea about how much rain we'd have, you had to dig around various weather sites (i.e. - weather.com, accuweather.com, weather.gov, etc.) and then appraise their forecasts while being aware enough of their own nuances to guess what to expect. I guess it's just one of many reminders that we have a long way to go to know how weather actually works.

  • DQ - it's just a little weather, don't be such a precious snowflake. I'm sure you'll be fine, rain or snow.

BJCP96, as always, I can tell you've thought long and hard about the subject at hand...but as much as I'd love everything to be about me, this is actually about bad forecasts.

  • Theres snow on the ground outside my house. Seems pretty accurate to me.

  • DQ: what a whiny little boy you are. Please direct your petty grievances to the weather forecasters, not the BG audience.

  • He's all sad he didn't get to make a little snowfriend a day early.

Today's the day bud, get out there and make one!

"Theres snow on the ground outside my house. Seems pretty accurate to me."

We all know it doesn't take much to convince you of something, BJCP96. I can only imagine the thrill you experienced when you first saw fire or a round rock rolling down a hill.

"DQ: what a whiny little boy you are. Please direct your petty grievances to the weather forecasters, not the BG audience."

What will you do if I don't?

  • Ohhhhh a keyboard warrior! Watch out everyone, DQ is super sensitive today because he was tricked into thinking there would be more snow yesterday. Poor thing.

If these are the great challenges that our community faces in February 2022, I am thankful.

Stay safe. Check on your senior and disabled neighbors.
