GCSC drops mask mandate

Wednesday, February 16, 2022

Effective immediately, masks will no longer be required at Greencastle Community Schools.

Supt. Jeff Gibboney made the announcement late Wednesday afternoon.

“Over the past couple of weeks, we have observed a steady decrease in the number of positive COVID-19 cases in our schools and the local community,” Gibboney said.

As such, the superintendent cited the improving landscape in giving the following requirements for masks moving forward:

• Masks will be recommended but not required in GCSC facilities.

• Masks will be required on buses while a federal mandate is in place.

• Schools with a weekly COVID-19 positivity rate above 5 percent will be required to wear masks indoors, regardless of vaccination status, until the weekly positivity rate drops below 4 percent.

Gibboney advised that those with questions call their building administrators.

This change returns to the policy with which GCSC began the second semester before spiking numbers from the omicron variant moved school officials to tie the mask requirement to the county’s COVID-19 status as determined by weekly Indiana State Department of Health (ISDH) updates.

Under that policy, GCSC’s mask requirement would remain in place as long as Putnam County remained in the red level, the highest level of Covid alert.

While Putnam remains in the red, the metrics have fallen significantly locally, with a weekly case rate of 268 per 100,000 residents and a seven-day positivity rate of 20 percent, according to ISDH metrics released Wednesday.

At one point last month, the weekly cases per 100,000 topped 1,500, while the positivity rate was above 30 percent.

The minimum threshold for the red level is 200 cases per 100,000 and 15 percent positivity. However, Putnam County is a minimum of two weeks away from dropping to an orange rating, as metrics must fall below the threshold for two consecutive weeks before the ISDH reduces the rating.

  • Better late than never.

Parents decide now that this was not effective and unnecessary.

    The science has changed. HA!

  • Would be interested to see how infection rates, serious illness, school days missed compared between Greencastle/North and a district that never mandated masks like South. I’d rather we didn’t have these mandates at all, but since we did/do, we might as well get some useful data from them.

  • This is some good news for the day!!!!

techphcy yes some honest data should be reported on the issue.

  • Excellent idea.

You might think a curious newspaper reporter serving the public would pick up on that.

I've heard some interesting comments from teachers that the kids aren't really bothered by the masks. "They get used to them."

    Really? Going on three years.

Going on two, but who's counting?

I'd also like to see the data. Thankfully the infection rates are dropping like a rock, but Putnam County is still red on the state's map...

I suspect that some of us are keen to remove our seat belts before the plane fully stops at the gate.

  • The data will be skewed. Parents stopped testing for mild cases.

  • Anyone who wants to wear a mask still has the freedom to do so.

If vaccinated, then we don’t need to worry about the unvaccinated so that is another worry to no longer impact us.

Honest data is not achievable but I love the thought process.

    Actually a lot of positives!

As a teacher, for over 20 years. My students were used to wearing masks.

They handle the situation SO MUCH BETTER than some parents. Also, we lost two teacher aides to COVID. So please know what you are talking about.

  • Looking at the four county schools comparatively, I am thankful that the past legislatures in Indiana have empowered the parents to have school choice in Indiana.

There is clearly now a choice to be made now that the masks of the various school boards are coming off and thankfully the kids masks are coming off as a result.

HB1134 is a result of the ISTA the teacher union promotion of one of the tentacles of what is commonly known throughout the country as the "Great Reset". The government public-school component of the Great Reset advocates for cultural abnormalities such as transgenderism and critical race theory within the various school's curricula. Not limited to curricula but also open classroom discussions, regardless of subject matter. Gender neutral restrooms and gender-neutral sports teams have roots in these "reset" conversations.

ISTA (Indiana School Teachers Association) and its local affiliate GCTA is clearly leading the board the of GCSC by promoting opposition to HB1134. Toss in the various School Administrators Associations and you have a monolith not being transparent to the public of its intentions.

  • Here is the ISTA website. See what they and the GCSC are promoting.

So, what about those parents that didn't like the masks on their kids?

What do you think they meant by objecting?

Did any kids say that didn't like the masks?

All were good with masks after "getting used" to them?

Did they all just resolve that there was nothing that could be done?

  • I don’t care for stop signs. They impede my progress. But I abide by them, because I respect other people’s right to not being t-boned when I ignore a stop sign.

  • Let me say the quiet part out loud.

The masks on school kids were never intended to protect the kids.

Masks on school kids is just so much more non-science.

Oh, the irony of that is thick.

    Are you awake yet?

  • Koios,

Should the mask mandate for schools still be in place? If yes, why? If no, why?

    Great Reset?

C'mon now Dire... Don't hold back now... Tell us more...

  • Beg, I don’t think it’s necessary now, with numbers heading down. It may be necessary to reimplement if the BA.2 variant arrives here. I rely on common sense, not conspiracy theories.

  • For you bunny, it would take too long.

-- Posted by direstraits on Sat, Feb 19, 2022, at 10:37 AM
  • Here is a hint bunny:

better be telling your ISTA money handlers to pull your union dues money out of the moderna, pfizer, J&J pharma stocks.

    oh, sorry, too late

-- Posted by direstraits on Sat, Feb 19, 2022, at 11:56 AM
  • Don't you mean practical sense? If common sense, then it would be common and we both know that isn't the case!!!

Well, we can agree to agree regarding the mask situation and what to rely on.

    Enjoy your weekend!

  • I agree with the above comment about the kids accepting wearing masks. They accepted the responsibility so much better than the parents.

    -- Posted by Queen53 on Mon, Feb 21, 2022, at 12:04 PM
  • Do u need to be reminded that the parents are the adults responsible for their children?

Unless you think the school has custody.

Maybe that’s the end game here.

The schools will govern them just like in all the other socialist/communist regimes.
