Sheriff’s Office

Putnam County sheriff’s deputies investigated seven recent property-damage crashes.

•At 5:59 a.m. on Tuesday, Albert L. Epple, 61, Brazil, was traveling northeast on Manhattan Road in a 2014 Kia Optima when the car left the road and hit a mailbox.

The vehicle then went through a ditch and launched over a driveway, coming to rest a couple hundred feet to the north of where it had left the road.

Cpl. Brian Helmer attributed the accident partly to an accelerator failure.

Epple complained of back pain but declined medical attention, saying he would get himself checked out.

The car was towed. Helmer estimated damage at $10,000-$25,000.

• At 7:41 p.m. on Monday, Billie M. White, 64, Brazil, was southbound on Manhattan Road in a 2002 Chevrolet Silverado when she hit a deer.

Deputy Robert Soilleux estimated damage at $2,500-$5,000.

• At 7:31 a.m. on Monday, Katherine Farris, 29, Greencastle, was northbound on U.S. 231 in a 2013 Hyundai Santa Fe when she hit a deer.

Deputy Tanner Brown estimated damage at $5,000-$10,000.

• At 6:30 a.m. on Monday, James D. Clampitt, 46, Greencastle, was eastbound on U.S. 40 in a 2015 GMC Canyon when two deer ran out in front of him and he hit them both.

The truck had to be towed. Deputy Todd Hopkins, assisted by Cpl. Brian Helmer, estimated damage at $5,000-$10,000.

• At 10:10 p.m. on Saturday, Ethan P. Stiles, 35, Indianapolis, was stopped southbound on U.S. 231 in a 2014 Ford F-150, waiting for a car in front of him to turn left onto County Road 700 South.

Anita E. Cline, 34, Cloverdale, was also southbound in a 2017 Chevrolet Cruze and did not notice Stiles’ truck at a stop, making heavy rear impact to the pickup.

Reserve Deputy Ken Rozelle noted no skid marks prior to impact. Rozelle, who was assisted by Cloverdale officers Wade Warren and Courtney Jaynes, also noted that Stiles’ brake lights were working.

Cline’s vehicle had to be towed. Rozelle estimated damage at $25,000-$50,000.

• At 6:32 p.m. on Saturday, Jade L. Karas, 18, Sullivan, was southbound on County Road 150 West approaching a 90-degree turn in a 2003 Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder.

Karas told Reserve Deputy Rozelle she was familiar with the curve, but as she entered it, her outside rear tire dropped off the road. The end of the road had a significant drop-off that caused a loss of vehicle control.

Rozelle noted that skid marks indicated Karas overcorrected and skidded 40 feet sideways across the road, making front end contact with the embankment on the opposite side of the road before coming to rest facing north.

Karas was taken to Putnam County Hospital for a scrape and swelling on her forehead.

The car was towed. Rozelle estimated damage at $2,500-$5,000.

• At 8:10 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 18, Yiming Chen, 23, Greencastle, was southbound on U.S. 231 near the intersection of County Road 700 South in a 2016 Lexus NX when a loose vehicle tire came into the road from an unknown location.

Chen was unable to avoid the tire, causing front-end damage, including radiator damage that left the vehicle in need of a tow.

Deputy Randy Patrick estimated damage at $5,000-$10,000.
