County Jail

Five people were booked in the Putnam County Jail recently.

Friday

• At 3:38 p.m. Joshua A. Smith, 39, Terre Haute, was lodged at the jail on a pair of local warrants.

• At 3:21 a.m. Patrick M. Kimes, 23, Fillmore, was taken into custody on a warrant.

Thursday

• At 11:53 p.m. Jeffrey L. Syrus, 68, Cloverdale, was housed at the jail for driving while intoxicated.

• At 7:37 p.m. Sadie E. Haas, 39, Greencastle, was booked in on a warrant.

• At 2:42 p.m. Bryan R. Jones, 60, Greencastle, was lodged at the jail for failure to register as a sex or violent offender.

City Police

Two recent arrests were reported by Greencastle City Police officers.

• At 10:42 p.m. Friday, Stacey Denise Cox, 52, Greencastle, was arrested at a Fairview Street residence.

Taken into custody by Capt. Charles Inman, Cox was lodged in the Putnam County Jail on a warrant for violation of probation with original charges of possession of methamphetamine and criminal mischief.

• At 10:26 p.m. Friday, Belissa R. O’Conner, 38, Greencastle, was arrested at the same Fairview Street residence by Officer Alec Pettit.

Booked into the jail on a Putnam County warrant for probation violation, O’Conner faces an original charge of maintaining a common nuisance/controlled substance.

Two recent citations were issued by city officers.

• At 5:40 p.m. Thursday, Gregory Smith, 51, Indianapolis, was ticketed by Officer Darrel Bunten.

Stopped at Washington and Bloomington streets, Smith was cited for operating a vehicle without financial responsibility (no insurance).

• At 10:20 p.m. Saturday, Susan L. Powell, 46, Waveland, was ticketed by Officer Pettit.

Stopped at Washington and Indiana streets, Powell was cited for disregarding a stoplight.

Sheriff’s Office

Putnam County sheriff’s deputies investigated one recent property-damage accident.

• At 7:03 a.m. on Thursday, Martin E. Handy, 50, Greencastle, was northbound on County Road 50 East in a 2007 Ford Focus when he hit a deer.

The vehicle suffered heavy front-end damage and had to be towed from the scene.

Deputy Todd Hopkins estimated damage at $10,000-$25,000.

City Fire

The Greencastle Fire Department responded to 15 incidents recently:

• At 4:17 p.m. on Thursday, GFD was dispatched to the Pulliam Center for Contemporary Media on the DePauw University campus for a water flow alarm. Firefighters arrived at 4:21 and were advised that the alarm system had been worked on. The alarm was reset. GFD went back into service at 4:28 p.m.

• At 10:53 p.m. on Thursday, GFD received a direct call for a gas leak at Delta Gamma on the DePauw University campus. Firefighters arrived at 10:55 and determined the leak was coming from a dishwasher. Gas to the dishwasher was cut and the property was ventilated. GFD went back into service at 11:15 p.m.

• At 11:38 a.m. on Friday, GFD responded to a mutual aid call with the Reelsville Volunteer Fire Department for a structure fire at 12090 S. CR 500 West. Firefighters arrived on the scene at 11:56 and found a mobile home fully involved with the fire spread to a small storage shed. The fire was extinguished, and no exact cause was determined. GFD went back into service at 1:12 p.m.

• At 2:08 p.m. on Friday, GFD was dispatched to Longden Hall on the DePauw University campus for a smoke alarm. Firefighters arrived at 2:14 and determined the alarm was due to cooking. The alarm was reset and the property was ventilated. GFD went back into service at 2:27 p.m.

• At 6:45 p.m. on Friday, GFD was dispatched to 304 S. Indiana St. for a fire alarm. Firefighters arrived at 6:50 and determined the alarm was due to cooking. The alarm was reset. GFD went back into service at 6:54 p.m.

• At 11:15 p.m. on Friday, GFD was dispatched to 412 S. Jackson St. for a fire alarm. Firefighters arrived at 11:18 and determined the alarm was due to cooking. The alarm was reset. GFD went back into service at 11:22 p.m.

• At 12:44 a.m. on Saturday, GFD was dispatched to 417 S. Locust St. for a fire alarm. Firefighters arrived at 12:50 and determined that a pull station had only been activated. The alarm was reset. GFD went back into service at 12:56 a.m.

• At 2:21 p.m. on Saturday, GFD assisted the Madison Township Volunteer Fire Department with a grass fire at 1027 N. CR 850 West. Firefighters arrived at 2:40 and extinguished the fire. GFD went back into service at 3:39 p.m.

• At 10:14 p.m. on Saturday, GFD was dispatched to motor vehicle incident with injuries at 1493 E. CR 225 South. Firefighters arrived on the scene at 10:22 and cleaned debris from the roadway. GFD went back into service at 10:39 p.m.

• At 12:08 p.m. on Sunday, GFD was dispatched to Blanchard House on the DePauw University campus for a fire alarm. Firefighters arrived at 12:11 and determined the alarm was due to cooking. The alarm was reset. GFD went back into service at 12:15 p.m.

• At 3:49 p.m. on Sunday, GFD was dispatched to a motor vehicle incident at the intersection of Sunset Drive and Jackson Street. Firefighters on the scene at 3:51 and cleaned debris from the roadway. GFD went back into service at 3:59 p.m.

• At 6:09 p.m. on Sunday, GFD was dispatched to 209 W. Liberty St. for a dumpster fire. Firefighters arrived at 6:12 and extinguished the fire. GFD went back into service at 6:34 p.m.

• At 6:34 p.m. on Sunday, GFD was dispatched to 914 S. Locust St. for an unauthorized burn. Firefighters arrived soon after and found the homeowner burning non-wood material in a pit. The fire was extinguished by the homeowner, and GFD went back into service at 6:43 p.m.

• At 10:08 p.m. on Sunday, GFD was dispatched to Bloomington Street Hall on the DePauw University campus for a fire alarm. Firefighters arrived at 10:10 and determined the alarm was due to burnt food in a microwave. The alarm was reset. GFD went back into service at 10:18 p.m.

• At 6:35 a.m. on Monday, GFD was dispatched to the intersection of Hill and Market streets for cable lines down. Firefighters found the hanging lines at 6:40 and were advised to contact Frontier. GFD went back into service at 6:50 a.m.

Additionally, GFD recently performed 10 medical assists and had one disregard.
