Families encouraged to make a plan for severe weather

Monday, March 14, 2022

Governor Eric Holcomb has proclaimed the week of March 13-19 as Severe Weather Preparedness Week in Indiana.

The goal of Severe Weather Preparedness Week is to build on the National Weather Service’s initiative of a “weather-ready nation,” in which Hoosiers are prepared for and can respond to all dangerous weather and flood hazards.

Families and friends are encouraged to make a plan in considering these different questions:

1. How will I receive emergency alerts and warnings?

2. What is my shelter plan?

3. What is my evacuation route?

4. What is my family/household communication plan?

5. Do I need to update my emergency preparedness kit?

Households should also consider specific needs. Factors to keep in mind when creating a plan are:

• Different ages of household members;

• Responsibilities for assisting others;

• Locations frequented;

• Dietary needs;

• Medical needs, including prescriptions and equipment;

• Disabilities or access and functional needs, including devices and equipment;

• Languages spoken;

• Cultural and religious considerations;

• Pets or service animals; and

• Households with school-aged children.

Families should also compile an emergency preparedness kit including the following:

• Food and water for three days (one gallon of water per person per day);

• Flashlights and extra batteries;

• A battery-powered or hand-crank radio (NOAA Weather Radio, if possible);

• A first aid kit;

• A seven-day medication supply;

• A multi-purpose tool;

• Personal hygiene items;

• Copies of personal documents;

• Extra money;

• Emergency blankets; and

• Baby and pet supplies.

The NWS, in conjunction with the Indiana State Police, Indiana Department of Homeland Security, Indiana Department of Education, Indiana Broadcasters Association, American Red Cross and Amateur Radio Operators, has scheduled a statewide test of communication systems on Tuesday, March 15 at 10:15 a.m. The test will be postponed if weather conditions warrant.
