Cloverdale High School student Ikia Calidonio recently earned a gold rating at a recent statewide Indiana State School Music Association (ISSMA) contest.

Calidonio was awarded the honor for her saxophone performance of Eugene Bozza’s “Aria” during the 2022 ISSMA State Solo & Ensemble Contest on Feb. 26 at North Central High School.

“Thank you for all of your practice, hard work and for representing Cloverdale so well at this event,” Cloverdale Band Director Jared Metzger said. “Keep it up.”

Calidonio was one of four Cloverdale band members to perform at the state contest, as eighth-graders Baye Montgomery and Ella Dicken and fellow high-schooler Sam Dorman also earned individual gold ratings during the regional ISSMA contest earlier in the month at Bloomington North High School.

The contest is an event where students have the opportunity to work on extra music as a soloist or in small groups.

Each performance is listened to and evaluated by a judge. The students are then given comments on how to improve their performance and awarded a gold, silver, bronze or participation medal depending on the level of their performance.

During the first contest, high-schoolers Evan Yoho, Sam Dorman and Preston Jannings earned a silver rating for their brass trio, while Biz Dorman, Ella Szczerbik, Fay Simpson and Calidonio earned silver for their woodwind quartet.
