County Jail

Five people were booked in the Putnam County Jail recently.

Wednesday

• At 11:28 p.m. Brian S. Richards, 45, Noblesville, was lodged at the jail for arson and theft.

• At 11:35 a.m. Sigmund A. Croan, 29, Greencastle, was taken into custody for probation violation.

Tuesday

• At 2:36 p.m. Christopher W. Garver, 52, Ladoga, was housed at the jail for driving as a habitual traffic violator.

• At 1:15 p.m. Kyal A. Campbell, 30, Poland, was booked in for possession of cocaine, unlawful possession of a syringe, possession of marijuana, driving with a suspended license with a prior conviction and probation violation.

Monday

• At 2:47 p.m. Jennifer L. Stultz, 44, Quincy, was lodged at the jail for driving as a habitual traffic violator.

City Police

A car-motorcycle accident was investigated Wednesday by Greencastle City Police officers.

• At 11:52 a.m., the two-vehicle mishap occurred on Warren Drive south of Indianapolis Road as Jennie Coy, 64, Greencastle, driving a 2017 Buick LaCrosse, was northbound, attempting to turn right into First Financial Bank.

Traveling behind Coy was Charles Johnson, 33, Poland, riding a 2017 Harley-Davidson motorcycle.

As Coy signaled to turn right, she said she heard the motorcycle rev up and was struck in the passenger-side door and quarter-panel. A witness waiting to pull out of the bank confirmed Coy’s story.

Johnson, who was taken to Eskenazi Hospital at Indianapolis with leg, foot and ankle injuries, said he thought Coy was turning left onto Avenue B and attempted to go around her car on the right.

Officer Darrel Bunten estimated damage at $2,500-$5,000.

Four recent citations were issued by city officers.

• At 3:40 p.m. Monday, Alexander Rivera Cruz, 25, Cloverdale, was ticketed for speeding by Officer Nick Eastham.

Stopped on South Street, Cruz was cited for 52 mph in a 30-mph zone.

• At 5:10 a.m. Sunday, Caleb Burns, 18, Greencastle, was cited by Officer Luke Brown.

Stopped at Arlington Street and Hillcrest Drive, Burns received a summons for an infraction of driving with a suspended license.

• At 9:05 p.m. Saturday, Amal Siddiqui, 21, Plainfield, was ticketed by Sgt. Brad Hiatt.

Stopped on Bloomington Street, Siddiqui was cited for an expired license plate.

• At 11:53 p.m. Friday, March 11, Brandon Buttery, 39, Greencastle, was ticketed by Sgt. Hiatt.

Improper lights and reflectors was the infraction as Buttery was stopped at Franklin and Indiana streets.

Sheriff’s Office

Putnam County sheriff’s deputies investigated four recent property-damage crashes.

• At 5:35 a.m. on Thursday, Mary Mace, 64, Greencastle, was northbound on U.S. 231 in a 2006 Ford F-150 when she hit a deer.

The truck had to be towed. Deputy Tanner Brown estimated damage at $5,000-$10,000.

• At 8:10 a.m. on Wednesday, Leslie Helderman, 43, Bainbridge, was westbound on U.S. 36 in a 2019 Dodge Grand Caravan when an eastbound red passenger car crossed into her lane.

Helderman told Deputy Todd Hopkins she swerved to avoid a head-on crash, and the two vehicles side-swiped each other.

The other car did not stop. Deputies and Bainbridge police searched the area but did not find a car matching the description of the other.

Hopkins estimated damage at $5,000-$10,000.

•At 7:06 p.m. on Sunday, Aubrey L. Bennett, 17, Coatesville, was westbound on County Road 350 South when she hit a deer.

Deputy Robert Soilleux estimated damage at $2,500-$5,000.

• At 7 a.m. on Friday, March 11, Coy A. Dickey, 52, Fillmore, was eastbound on State Road 240 in a 2015 International 400 garbage truck registered to Jack’s Trash. Shandra C. Snowden, 49, Greencastle, was eastbound behind the trash truck in a 2018 Jeep Cherokee.

Snowden told Cpl. Brian Helmer the trash truck was driving slowly and she attempted to pass him on the left. She believed that his flashers were activated, but as she tried to pass, Dickey began to turn left into a driveway at 6569 E. SR 240. Snowden collided with the left rear area of the trash truck.

Following the crash, Snowden said the “flashers” may have been a turn signal.

Dickey told Helmer he had his turn signal activated, but Snowden attempted to pass as he was starting to turn.

Snowden’s vehicle was towed. Helmer estimated damage at $10,000-$25,000.

City Fire

The Greencastle Fire Department responded to five incidents recently:

• At 8:07 p.m. on Tuesday, GFD was dispatched to 500 S. Jackson St. for a fire alarm. Firefighters arrived at 8:09 and determined the alarm was due to smoking. The alarm was reset. GFD went back into service at 8:26 p.m.

• At 8:33 p.m. on Tuesday, GFD was dispatched to 600 S. Jackson St. for a smoke smell. Firefighters arrived at 8:37 and did not find any smoke, but found that two spotlights were hotter than others. GFD advised that the spotlights be turned off and went back into service at 9:24 p.m.

• At 12:04 a.m. on Wednesday, GFD was dispatched to Delta Tau Delta on the DePauw University campus for a hot smell. Firefighters arrived at 12:06 and found that a motor on a hood had locked up. Power was cut to the hood and it was advised that it be repaired. GFD went back into service at 12:19 a.m.

• At 11:56 a.m. on Wednesday, GFD responded to a motor vehicle accident with injuries at the intersection of Avenue B and Warren Drive. Firefighters arrived on the scene at 12:03 p.m. and assisted with patient care and cleaned debris from the roadway. GFD went back into service at 12:17 p.m.

• At 11:57 p.m. on Wednesday, GFD was dispatched to 40 Frazier St. for an unauthorized burn. Firefighters arrived at 12:03 a.m. Thursday and found that the homeowner was burning trash and leaves. The fire was extinguished by firefighters and the homeowner. GFD went back into service at 12:16 a.m.

Additionally, GFD recently performed four medical assists.
