Sheriff’s Office

Putnam County sheriff’s deputies responded to a pair of recent crashes.

• At 10:22 a.m. on Tuesday, Marcellus Furlow, 35, Chicago, was southbound on County Road 150 West in a 2020 Freightliner New Cascadia registered to Schneider National.

Furlow told Deputy Tanner Brown he came to a stop because of a broken down garbage truck in front of him, but believed he could make it through front yards next to the road to get around the other vehicle. However, the tractor-trailer became stuck.

Brown cited Furlow for disobeying traffic control devices or flagman.

The deputy estimated damage at $1,000-$2,500.

• At 12:20 a.m. on Friday, April 1, a 2003 Toyota Tundra was southbound on County Road 375 West rounding a curve when he lost control of his 2003 Toyota Tundra.

Deputy Robert Soilleux said marks indicated the vehicle began to slide sideways on the slick road, crossing the center line and running off the road, with the car rolling several times and coming to rest on the driver’s side in a driveway.

The owner of the property told Soilleux he came outside to find the truck on its side and no one around. A few minutes later, a car pulled up, and the vehicle’s registered owner, Harley A. Coffey, 43, Brazil, got out, saying he had called a tow truck to retrieve the vehicle. That was when the property owner called the police.

Soilleux reported that Coffey did not appear to be intoxicated or injured. He said he lost control on the slick road and did not report the crash because his phone battery was dead and the home was in darkness so he did not want to disturb the residents and no one came to check on him.

Coffey further told Soilleux he was trying to walk home to Brazil to get some help, then came back to get the vehicle.

Soilleux cited Coffey for speed too fast for conditions.

The truck was towed. Soilleux estimated damage at $10,000-$25,000.
