Tiger Cub bats blister through Athenians

Crawfordsville just couldn’t keep the red hot Greencastle Tiger Cub offense from continuing their hot hitting at the plate on Saturday. Greencastle scored early and often including eight runs in the first and second innings en route to a 26-6 victory over CHS in five innings. Crawfordsville did finish with a bright spot on offense as the Athenians were able to score three runs in the last half of the fifth inning. The last run of the game came off the bat of Brooklyn Mills who crushed a ball over the right-center field wall for her first home run of the season.

“We see that power every day in the cage,” first-year Crawfordsville Brad Clark said of Mills’s home run. “She has been pressing little bit here early in the season so it was just nice to see her drive one. If she continues to do that then she’ll be a force all year for us.”

Greencastle pounded out 23 hits in the game as all 10 Tiger Cubs who had an at-bat collected a hit. Emma Hunter led the way with four hits and four RBI’S in the win. Sidney Lantzy, Raigen Chavez, and Haley Iseman all had three hits for Greencastle.

The win for the Tiger Cubs marks their second straight game where they offense has come alive to carry them to a victory. Last Friday they used 13 runs to secure a win over Lebanon and have also scored 19 runs in a 20-19 loss to North Central in the early part of the season. Tiger Cubs coach Amy Coons has loved what she’s been seeing from her offense so far.

“They’ve been working really hard during practice to get to this point,” Coons said. “The best part about this year is it doesn’t matter if it’s our lead-off hitter or our No. 9 hitter, we don’t have a weak spot in the lineup. I can put the lineup together and feel comfortable with anyone at any spot.”

Kira Thayer took the loss on the mound for the Athenians allowing 16 runs (just five earned) over two innings while giving up 15 hits. She also walked a pair of batters and struck out a pair.

Allie Beaman picked up the win in the circle for Greencastle as she threw all five innings, giving up eight hits and five earned runs while striking out four.
