The Little Walnut Conservancy District lost more than a board member on Wednesday.

With Kenny Davis stepping away from his position, the board is losing a big piece of the history of Glenn Flint Lake.

Sure, Davis has been a valued board member since 1995, but he’s actually been there from the beginning as part of the excavating crew that built the lake in the years before it was filled in 1976.

In a sense, both his excavating work and his place on the board were inherited, as his late father Howard Davis both started the excavating business and served on the board before his son.

“I kind of took over from him,” Davis said. “I took this board position over from him.”

The younger Davis has been running excavating equipment for 60 years, which has included not only building the lake, but helping maintain it for going on 50 years.

Administrative and financial secretary Kathy Deer explained that most of the projects around Glenn Flint are relatively small, so the board usually handles them by itself. Generally, Deer noted, this means Davis has done the work.

This has included climbing 40 feet down the tower at the main dam as well as mowing on grades near the dams that fellow board member Mike Dean said he wouldn’t dare mow.

“We just did what we needed to do,” Davis said. “It’s been rewarding and fun. I appreciate the board members putting up with me.”

In presenting Davis with a clock for his years of service, Little Walnut Manager Charlie Boller had high praise, noting that he didn’t know Davis all that well before taking over his position with the district.

“I’ve been blessed to have certain people in my life at the right time,” Boller said, noting that he has learned a lot from Davis in the last three years. “This job brought me a little closer to Kenny, and I love that.”

The Little Walnut Conservancy District board includes President David Lane, Vice President Mike Dean, Steve Stamper, Kevin Hubble and Steve Albin.

Aside from Glenn Flint Lake, Little Walnut Conservancy District includes a wooded area with some specific rules. These include the prohibition of motorized vehicles – notably ATVs and UTVs – in the wooded area at all times.

Additionally, there is leased hunting allowed in the wooded area, but only by the lessee and only between the dates of Sept. 1 and March 1. For this reason, no one but the lessee is allowed in the woods between these dates.

Anyone with questions may contact Boller at 765-720-4179.
