County Jail

Eight people were booked in the Putnam County Jail recently.

Wednesday

• At 11:26 p.m. Gavin D. Hoopingarner, 18, Brazil, was lodged at the jail for theft.

• At 6:30 p.m. Robert L. Jones, 43, Danville, was taken into custody on an out-of-county warrant for escape and domestic battery.

• At 12:57 p.m. Grant A. Stevens, 50, Greencastle, was housed at the jail for possession of methamphetamine and possession of paraphernalia with a prior conviction.

• At 5:03 a.m. Jonathan A. Matt, 42, Coatesville, was booked in on an out-of-county warrant.

Tuesday

• At 9:42 p.m. Nicholas R. Szalay, 27, Poland, was lodged at the jail for driving with an ACE of .15 or more, driving while intoxicated and driving with a suspended license with a prior conviction.

• At 3:47 p.m. Zachary S. Hayman, 57, Cloverdale, was taken into custody for intimidation, disorderly conduct and driving with a suspended license with a prior conviction.

• At 12:05 a.m. Billy J. Dyer, 61, Greencastle, was housed at the jail on an out-of-county warrant.

Monday

• At 7:08 p.m. Samantha J. Duncan, 36, Greencastle, was booked in for unlawful use of a legend drug.

City Police

Two recent property-damage accidents were investigated by Greencastle City Police officers.

• At 1:45 p.m. Monday, a two-vehicle mishap on 10th Street/Warren Drive near the south entrance to Walmart Distribution was investigated by Officer Darrel Bunten.

James P. Coy, 44, Greencastle, was northbound on Warren Drive, driving a 2013 Dodge Ram 3500 pickup as Michael R. Adkins, 44, Terre Haute, was driving a 2002 Chevrolet Trailblazer, attempting to exit the Walmart parking lot.

Coy said he observed Adkins pull out and stop partially in the travel lane, resulting in a collision with the Coy vehicle.

Adkins said he was leaving work and when traffic cleared on 10th Street, he moved forward to double-check that it was clear when he realized too late that he had pulled into Coy’s path.

Total damage in the accident was estimated at $5,000-$10,000.

• At 11:08 p.m. Saturday, a two-vehicle mishap was reported at Broadway and Bloomington Street.

Officer Jared McDaniel reported that Nayelli Espinoza, 22, Chicago, was eastbound on Broadway, approaching Bloomington Street in a 2007 Honda CRV. When she stopped at the stopsign, Espinoza realized she had pulled too far into the southbound lanes of Bloomington Street and attempted to back up to get out of the way of approaching traffic.

However, when she backed up Espinoza failed to noticed that a 2011 Chevrolet Malibu, driven by Heidi Witt, 40, Greencastle, had stopped behind her. The Espinoza car made contact with the front bumper of the Witt vehicle, resulting in an estimated $1,000-$2,500 total damage, McDaniel reported.

Sheriff’s Office

Putnam County sheriff’s deputies investigated two recent property-damage crashes.

• At 1:50 p.m. on Tuesday, Jon Handy, 62, Fillmore, was eastbound on U.S. 36 in a 2016 Nissan NV van registered to 3D Auto Supply, Greencastle. Gloria Miller, 67, Trafalgar, was also eastbound, in front of Handy, in a 2012 Dodge Ram.

Handy told Deputy Josh Clark he must have looked down, at which time he struck the back end of Miller’s truck.

Both vehicles were towed. Clark estimated damage at $5,000-$10,000.

• At 4:55 a.m. on Tuesday, David Wallen, 42, Brazil, was northbound on County Road 400 West in a 2007 Pontiac G6 when he hit a deer.

The vehicle was towed. Deputy Tanner Brown estimated damage at $1,000-$2,500.

City Fire

The Greencastle Fire Department responded to three incidents since Tuesday:

• At 10:51 p.m. on Tuesday, GFD was dispatched to Humbert Hall on the DePauw University campus for a fire alarm. Firefighters arrived at 10:55 and could not determine a cause for the alarm. The alarm was reset. GFD went back into service at 11:03 p.m.

• At 12:21 a.m. on Wednesday, GFD was dispatched to Sigma Alpha Epsilon on the DePauw campus for a fire alarm. Firefighters arrived at 12:27 and determined the alarm was due to smoking. The alarm was reset, but the system was found to be in trouble mode. Firefighters advised that it be repaired. GFD went back into service at 12:33 a.m.

• At 6:50 p.m. on Wednesday, GFD was dispatched to the DePauw-owned duplex at 107 W. Hanna St. for a fire alarm. Firefighters arrived at 6:54 and determined the alarm was due to cooking. The alarm was reset. GFD went back into service at 6:57 p.m.

Additionally, GFD performed six medical assists during this time.
