Tiger Cubs blanked by Mustangs; Clovers fourth at Bob Arnett

The Greencastle girls’ tennis team hosted one of the favorites in the WRC, the Fountain Central Mustangs, and fell 5-0.

A young Tiger Cub squad got off to a rough start on the doubles side, losing both matches. In number one doubles, sophomores Bella Monnett and Liberty Amis, lost in straight sets to the team of Jimenez and Mallady 6-0,6-1. The other doubles team of Gabi Merrell and Kadence Shaner also lost in straight sets 6-2,-6-1 to the pair of Muniz and Prickett.

In singles the first match to complete was number 2, where Caroline Gooch lost to Haley Webb 6-0,6-1. Number three singles was a competitive match as sophomore Sophie Riggle battled hard but fell 6-3,7-5. In the best matchup of the night, another sophomore Maddie Landry had a three set marathon with Senior Lillie Fishero. Fishero fought all the way back from down 4-1 in the first set to win 7-5. Landry then controlled the second set, pulling out a 6-1 win. In the finale Fishero was able to outlast Landry, taking the last two games and edged out a 6-3 win.

The Cadets struck early and often, scoring multiple runs in each of their four innings at the plate to quickly dispatch the Tiger Cubs, who picked up a pair of hits through Treyten Clark and Cooper Williams Thursday night.

Ben Huff took the loss on the mound, giving up seven hits and eight runs, four earned, while issuing four walks in three innings. Owen Huff tossed an inning, giving up four runs on a hit and five walks, striking out two.

Despite a late push Friday, Greencastle was handed a second-straight loss in Hendricks County, falling to the Bruins after the home team scored five runs in the second to take the lead for good.

Keifer Wilson bagged four RBIs as part of a 4-for-4 day at the plate, including two doubles, but only Clark and Huff knocked a run other than the senior catcher.

Clark took the loss, giving up seven hits and six runs, one earned, in three innings, striking and three and walking three. Wilson pitched three innings, giving up a pair of runs on four hits while striking out four.

Parke Heritage 11, North Putnam 1 (5)

Seven runs in the second inning turned a 1-0 Cougar lead into a 7-1 deficit that the Wolves would build on to win by run-rule.

Brayden Monnett drove in the sole run for the visitors and two of the team’s five hits Friday night.

Isaac Thomason took the loss on the mound, giving up seven hits and nine runs, four earned, in 2 1/3 innings pitched. Monnett gave up a pair of runs on two hits in 1 2/3 innings of work.

Covenant Christian 19, South Putnam 3 (6)

A 1-0 Eagle lead was a distant memory by the end Friday night as the hosts avoided a five-inning game but eight runs in the six would get the job done for the Warriors.

Ayden Battin drove in a pair of runs while Kyle Glasson added an RBI. Wyatt Mullin hit two doubles.

Trystan Smithers took the loss, giving up six runs on seven hits in 2 2/3 innings. Kyle Glasson gave up six runs on two hits and five walks in 3 1/3 innings of work. Wyatt Switzer gave up six runs on three hits and three walks.

Northview 11, Cloverdale 1 (6)

Ethan Wright drove in the lone run for the Clovers Thursday night on the road as the Knights slowly piled on runs before ending the game in the sixth.

Levi Hilton took the loss on the mound, giving up eight runs on six hits and two walks, striking out four. Brady Koosman tossed 1 1/3 innings, giving up two runs on three hits and a pair of walks.

Softball

Parke Heritage 7, Greencastle 4

The Tiger Cubs scored twice in the first two innings but the bats found no joy from that point on as the Wolves took the lead in third and tacked on runs in the fourth and fifth for insurance Thursday night.

Sydney Lantzy had three hits, including a triple, while Emma Hunter had a double and two RBIs. Emma West and Allie Beaman both knocked in runs.

Evelyn Briones took the loss, giving up eight hits and six runs in 3 2/3 innings while walking and striking out two. Haley Iseman pitched the other 2 1/3 innings, giving up a hit and an unearned run.

Danville 5, North Putnam 2

North Putnam 15, Parke Heritage 11

North Putnam scored twice early Thursday night but would not score after the second inning as the Warriors ground out a close win.

Grace Kinkead and Ashley Weir each drove in a run but seven hits and two walks were scattered over seven innings in the loss.

Kinkead threw two innings in the circle, giving up four hits and a run before giving way to Kyndal Brewer, who took the loss, giving up four runs while striking out three.

Friday, North Putnam found its bats, scoring the last seven runs of the games to beat the Wolves in a game where the teams combined for five home runs.

Brilye Schmitz had five RBIs, including a two-run double in the sixth and three-run home run in the seventh, while Brewer had a two-run home run in the first and drove in three runs and Samie Hoops had a solo shot in the second inning along with two doubles, also driving in three runs.

Brewer took the win on the mound, pitching 5 1/3 innings, giving up two runs on five hits with three strikeouts. Karyssa Miller was hit hard in 2/3 of an inning, giving up five runs on six hits while Kinkead pitched an inning, giving up four runs on three hits and a walk.

Clay City 10, South Putnam 0 (5)

Chloe Pistelli managed a base knock to prevent a no-hit bid for the Eels as the Eagles were quickly dispatched.

Sabrina Leonard took the loss, throwing 3 2/3 innings, giving up six hits and eight runs along with three walks. Jaicee Jackson pitched a 1/3 inning, giving up two runs on a home run.

Boys’ Golf

Cloverdale shot 355 to finish fourth at the Bob Arnett Invitational while Greencastle shot 373 and finished eighth overall. Bloomington North topped the leaderboard on 341 with Terre Haute South edging Terre Haute North 346-347 for runner-up Saturday afternoon at Rea Park.

Sullivan’s Wyatt Piel finished as medalist in a playoff over fellow Golden Arrow Gavin Jenkins and South’s Peyton Turner, all finishing on 82.

Eli Kelley shot 85 to lead the Clovers with Zach Thomas (88), Noah Betz (90) and Max Kaufman (92) all right behind. Carson Caulkins came in on 113.

Tyler Rodgers led the Tiger Cubs on 91 with Vincent Martoglio (93), Zane Huber (93) and Lathan Worman (96) also tightly bunched. Clark Shafer carded a 107 as well.
