While a three-way contest for the Republican nomination for Putnam County sheriff headlines Tuesday’s primary election, the Putnam County GOP ballot features several contested races of note.
Republican voters county-wide will have the chance to choose their party’s nominee for sheriff, clerk, recorder and surveyor, while GOP voters in Russell, Franklin, Jackson, Floyd and Monroe townships will pick the nominee for Putnam County Council District 1.
There are no contested races Democratic races at the county level. Indeed, just three townships county-wide even feature uncontested Democrat candidates.
Local vote centers
The polls will be open between the hours of 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Tuesday, May 3 at the following locations:
• Putnam County Courthouse, 1 W. Washington St., Greencastle
• Cloverdale American Legion, 501 S. Main St., Cloverdale
• Reelsville Fire Department, 7748 S. CR 625 West, Reelsville
• Bainbridge Community Building, 201 N. Grant Ave., Bainbridge
• Floyd Township Fire Protection District, 6901 E. CR 380 North, Fillmore (Heritage Lake)
• Putnam County Fairgrounds Community Building, 191 N. U.S. 231, Greencastle
• Greencastle American Legion, 1401 Indianapolis Rd., Greencastle
• Wellspring Christian Church, 3256 S. CR 725 East, Coatesville
Registered Putnam County voters are eligible to vote at any of these eight vote centers.
Polls will be open from 6 a.m.-6 p.m. on Tuesday, May 3. For the complete list of vote centers, see the sidebar at right.
The sheriff’s race is between veteran Indiana Excise Police Officer Jerrod Baugh, Cloverdale Town Marshal Steve Hibler and current Putnam County Sheriff’s Office Maj. Dwight Simmons. Current Sheriff Scott Stockton will reach the end of his second term on Dec. 31.
Meanwhile, current Putnam County Recorder Tracy Bridges and First Deputy Clerk Debbie Ensor are vying to replace two-term Clerk Heather Gilbert.
The race for recorder features a pair of two-term county office holders, as Gilbert and former two-term Auditor Lorie Hallett-Talbert seek the nomination.
In an office that is not term limited, 35-year County Surveyor David Penturf nonetheless faces a challenge for the nomination by Greg Williams, who co-owns ASA Land Surveying in Greencastle
In Council District 1, 12-year Councilman Dave Fuhrman is challenged by political newcomer Wayne Huffman.
Just two other contested races are on the ballot anywhere in the county, as in Franklin Township former Roachdale Town Councilman Zach Bowers looks to unseat current Trustee Clyde Coulter, while in Cloverdale, Cindy Holland has a challenge for her Ward 3 seat by Brandon Tancak.
Uncontested incumbents on the ballot include Circuit Court Judge Matthew Headley, Prosecutor Tim Bookwalter, District 1 Commissioner Rick Woodall and District 2, 3 and 4 councilmen Jay Alcorn, Danny Wallace and Keith Berry respectively.
Don Badolato, who is currently a deputy assessor, is likewise unopposed in his bid to replace retiring Assessor Janet Brown.
Also unopposed are U.S. Sen. Todd Young (Greenwood), District 4 U.S. Rep. Jim Baird (Greencastle) and District 44 State Rep. Beau Baird (Greencastle).
The only contested race on the local Democratic ballot at any level is for the District 4 congressional seat, as Roger Day of Avon faces off with Howard Pollchik of Crawfordsville. Thomas McDermott Jr. is unopposed in his bid for the Democratic nomination in the U.S. Senate race.
