Tiger Cubs lose tough road game to Mounties

Monday, May 2, 2022

NEW MARKET — It wasn’t the ending the Tiger Cubs wanted to see.

A Southmont hit with two outs in the bottom of the seventh scored the winning run, and Greencastle lost to the Mounties 3-2.

The Tiger Cubs had scored two unearned runs, including one in the top of the seventh to tie the game, and were one out from forcing extra innings, when Southmont sophomore Jacob Fox stuck a bat in front of a 3-2 pitch and punched it into right field, allowing the winning run to cross.

The loss scrubbed a good pitching effort by DJ Wells, as the senior started and lasted until that very last hitter before running out of pitches. Ben Huff came in to pitch to Fox.

The loss drops the Tiger Cubs to 8-6, while the Mounties pick up their second win of the season against 10 losses.

“We didn’t play very well tonight,” Greencastle coach Ben Wells said. “We were pretty lackadaisical and there wasn’t much energy. Our hitters had too many poor plate appearances. We’ve played a lot of games in a short time frame, and we made too many mistakes.”

Wells struck out seven and walked three in his 6 2/3 innings of work. He scattered eight hits, but there were five errors behind him, including two in a short stretch of the fourth inning, when Southmont scored its first two runs.

Jaylen Bushong scored the first run for the Tiger Cubs in the first inning, when the visitors took advantage of a Mounties error. Keifer Wilson’s double drove in Bushong.

The only other run came in the seventh when Wells doubled to lead off the inning, reached third on an infield out, and then scored on a throwing error.

Treyten Clark finished with two of the Tiger Cubs five hits.

Carter Hubble went the distance for Southmont, striking out 10 and walking not a batter. Fox finished with two of the nine Mounties’ hits.

“It was a big win for us,” Southmont coach Brad Wininger said. “It has been a rough couple weeks, and it was nice to get one tonight. “Hubble did a good job on the mound, and Fox came up with those two big hits.”

The Tiger Cubs are back in action Friday when they travel to North Central. They have three games in a row starting Monday, including two conference games.
