North Putnam battles, falls short of Cascade; Tiger Cubs, Cougars earn quick wins on softball diamond

Monday, May 2, 2022

ROACHDALE — The North Putnam Cougars baseball team faced an uphill battle facing the number four ranked 2A team, the Cascade Cadets. The Cougars left 10 runners on base in an 8-1 home loss Thursday night.

After holding the Cadets in the top half of the first, the Cougars threatened in the bottom half. A leadoff walk to Brayden Monnett and a Cadet error put runners on the corners. Nicholas Hensley reached on a fielder’s choice and Kovey Jeter walked to load the bases, but they would be stranded and leave three on to end the inning. It would be a pattern as they left 10 men on base in the game.

Cascade scored one in the second as Carson Bassett drove in one with a sac fly. The Cougars were able to scratch out a run in the bottom half of the inning. A one out walk to Doug O’Hair followed by a double from Zach Huff had them in business. O’Hair would score on an RBI groundout from Monnett to tie the game at one.

The Cougars left the bases full in the third inning, not capitalizing on three Cadet walks. Cascade would start to break out in the fifth. Their first three men reached base. Trey Gruca singled and would later score on a throwing error, Jonas Johnson singled and scored on a sac fly and Evan Lanphier would also score on another sac fly to make it 4-1.

Cascade would add two more in the sixth and the seventh, with two coming off the bat of Hunter Greathouse with a two run bomb to left. Relief pitcher Garrett Bassett was able to keep the Cougars at bay for the rest of the game and pick up the win.

Nicholas Hensley picked up the loss, pitching all seven innings. North Putnam falls to 7-6 on the season. The Cougars next face Owen Valley Tuesday evening. Cascade improves 12-3 on the season.

Owen Huff started the game, pitching four innings, giving up five hits and four runs while striking out six.
