Greencastle doubles down, claims second-straight county track sweep

Greencastle won both sides of the Putnam County Track and Field Meet Tuesday at Cloverdale with the boys clearing the field by a wide margin, winning with 99 points over North Putnam's 61 with South Putnam third on 49 and Cloverdale fourth on 30. The Tiger Cub girls also won with a sizable margin on 84 points with the Eagles second on 64, the Clovers third on 50 and the Cougars fourth on 36.

CLOVERDALE – Greencastle won 17 total events Tuesday evening to repeat a sweep of the Putnam County Track and Field Meet after claiming both titles in 2021 as well.

The Tiger Cubs won the boys’ meet by a comfortable 99-61 margin over second-place North Putnam while South Putnam was third on 49 points and Cloverdale fourth on 30 points. The girls’ meet was slightly closer with Greencastle beating out the Eagles 84-64 with the Clovers third on 50 points and the Cougars fourth on 36 points.

On the track, the Tiger Cubs won five of the six relay events and eight individual races, along with four wins in the field events. South Putnam had seven county champions on the night while North Putnam won five events and Cloverdale took three top spots.

Charlie Menzel and Stuart Nichols led the charge for Greencastle on the track, each picking up four wins with Menzel winning the 800-meter run (2:11.86), the 1,600-meter run (4:54.66) and the 3,200-meter run (10:51.07) while anchoring the winning 3,200-meter relay team along with Tyler Adams, Brandon Olson and Daniel Dinn (9:24.47).

Nichols won the 100-meter dash (11.24) and 200-meter dash (23.08) while anchoring both the winning 400-meter relay with Lamar Moore, Cole Hutcheson and Abram Nichols (44.74) and the 1,600-meter relay with the same quartet (3:40.79).

Other winners for the boys included Hutcheson in the high jump (5-10j) and Jacob Simmerman in shot put (40-02).

Susanna Akinwole pulled in four wins as well for the Tiger Cub girls, narrowly edging out teammate Ali Dobbs in both the 100-meter dash (12.61-12.71) and the 200-meter dash (27.82-27.89) while the pair combined to help win the 400-meter relay with Lauren Elam and Autumn Shrum (52.49) and the 1,600-meter relay with Raigan Chavez and Kyra Bandy (4:33.54).

Chavez added a win in the 400-meter dash (1:06.70) while Skyler Byrd won the pole vault (8-00) to round out the county champions for Greencastle.

Sarah Jones and Hanna Teipen claimed two wins each for South Putnam with the former winning both the 800-meter run (2:42.30) and 1,600-meter run (5:52.63) while Teipen won both the discus (84-08) and the shot put (30-04).

The Eagles also won both hurdle events in the girls’ meet with Bailey Brickert winning the 100-meter hurdles (15.59) and Lilly Vittetow winning the 300-meter hurdles (49.66). Parker Pelfrey claimed the lone win for the Eagle boys by beating out teammate Ben Teipen for the win in discus (111-09-111-03).

Nolan Hackleman and Gabe Garcia picked up a pair of wins each for North Putnam, the former winning the long jump (20-08) and the 400-meter dash (51.94) while the latter won both the 110-meter hurdles (14.61), setting a new school record in the event, and the 300-meter hurdles (41.11).

Ella Szczerbik helped Cloverdale to a pair of wins, taking home the title in the 3,200-meter run (12:43.22) and anchoring the 3,200-meter relay team of Hannah Baker, Daphanie Geiger and Abigail Nees (13:03.04). Killian Dewey claimed the other win for the Clovers, winning the pole vault (9-00).

The county schools will compete in the WIC Track and Field Meets next week with the girls competing at Edgewood Tuesday and the boys at Northview Thursday.
