Yowell, Gardner named IASP District 8 Principals of the Year
South Putnam Middle/High School Principal Levi Yowell and Asst. Principal Tona Gardner are to be recognized later this year by the Indiana Association of School Principals (IASP) as being among the top administrators throughout the state.
Yowell and Gardner were recently tapped as the 2022 Principal and Assistant Principal of the Year, respectively, representing District 8, which includes Putnam, Clay, Greene, Hendricks, Owen, Parke, Sullivan, Vermillion and Vigo counties. The IASP is divided into 12 geographical districts, each with its own leadership.
Those recognized are elected by their peers, in which one principal and one assistant principal is selected from each district. One High School Principal of the Year and an Assistant Principal of the Year representing the entire state will be chosen among them.
“I was very surprised to be selected for this recognition, because there are so many outstanding principals in our district,” Yowell said in a statement to the Banner Graphic. “I am incredibly blessed to be a part of an amazing school with talented educators, dedicated support staff, awesome students and supportive families.”
Yowell had praise for Gardner, whom he described as “an absolute rock star,” in working with her as an administrator.
“She is a dynamic and professional educational leader who cares about students and pushes everyone in our building to be their best,” he said. “I am so thankful to have worked with her for the past three years and appreciate all of her efforts on behalf of South Putnam.”
Yowell and Gardner will be individually recognized at a ceremony on Nov. 20 in Indianapolis, during which the overall Principal and Assistant Principal of the Year will be announced. It will be held in conjunction with the IASP’s annual fall professional conference.
The IASP is a nonprofit, professional association serving more than 3,300 building-level school administrators in the state.
