South Putnam leads county schools at WIC Girls' Track Meet

ELLETTSVILLE – An appealing evening of weather greeted the teams participating in Tuesday’s WIC Girls’ Track and Field Championships at Edgewood High School where the hosts and Northview battled back and forth for conference supremacy.

The Mustangs would use their strength in the field events to ultimately fend off the Knights, winning 149.75-132.5 with West Vigo finishing a distant third.

South Putnam finished fifth behind Indian Creek on 42 points, three better than Brown County in sixth, with Greencastle seventh on 34.5 points, followed by Sullivan and Owen Valley. Cloverdale finished 10th on 21 points and North Putnam finished 11th place with four points.

The county schools had one champion on the day as South Putnam sophomore Bailey Brickert defended her 100-meter hurdle title from a year ago, topping the race with a time of 16.61. Teammate Lilly Vittetow finished sixth in the event in 19.00. Greencastle’s Kyra Bandy qualified for the final but had a false start to miss out on points fo.

Prior to the hurdles, Cloverdale’s 3,200-meter relay team of Hannah Baker, Abby Nees, Daphanie Geiger and Ella Szczerbik finished sixth in 11:50.12 with Greencastle’s team of Michayla Dinn, Meredith Ball, Stephanie Morales and Audrie Brennan finishing seventh in 12:22.44, .01 seconds in front of Sullivan.

Tiger Cub freshmen Susanna Akinwole and Ali Dobbs finished sixth and seventh in the 100-meter dash finals, crossing with times of 13.60 and 13.81.

Sarah Jones picked up a third-place finish in the 1,600-meter run in 5:50.60 with North Putnam’s Jacy Huffman finishing eighth overall in 6:16.53, beating out Nees and teammate Madalynn Trent who finished ninth and 10th respectively.

Greencastle finished as runner-up in the 400-meter relay through the team of Dobbs, Akinwole, Autumn Shrum and Raigan Chavez in 52.56 with South Putnam finishing eighth through the team of Vittetow, Brickertt, Bayli Clampitt and Hanna Teipen in 55.44.

Bandy finished seventh in the 400-meter dash in 1:05.74 for the Tiger Cubs with Chavez missing out on a placement by finishing ninth.

Vittetow finished as runner-up in the 300-meter hurdles in 50.44 while Cloverdale’s Olivia Hemmerling finished sixth in 55.19.

Jones grabbed a seventh-place finish for the Eagles in the 800-meter run in 2:40.24 with Dinn and Geiger finishing outside the placement spots in ninth and 10th respectively.

Akinwole finished fourth in the 200-meter dash for Greencastle in 28.17 while Szczerbik and Jones placed fourth and fifth in the 3,200-meter run in 12:57.54 and 13:03.97 respectively.

Cloverdale topped North Putnam and South Putnam in the 1,600-meter relay for sixth place as the team of Hemmerling, Nees, Szczerbik and Kiersten Wade finishing 4:50.92 while Trent, Baylee Miller, Addi Osburn and Saylor Carrell finished in 5:02.19 and Clampitt, Brickertt, Vittetow and Lilly Emmerich finished in 5:04.16.

In the field events, Cloverdale’s Lexianne Dewey finished tied for second in the pole vault with Edgewood’s Ashley Abram while Northview’s Emma Dickison won the event, all three clearing 8-00 but the latter did so with less missed attempts. Greencastle’s Skyler Byrd finished tied for fifth with West Vigo’s Madalynn Ballinger clearing 7-06.

Teipen finished fourth in shot put with a distance of 31-00.50 with Greencastle’s Hope Graham finishing seventh with a throw of 29-10, just ahead of North Putnam’s Callee Riggle, who finished eighth with a throw of 29-08.75

Lilly Barnhart finished sixth for the Tiger Cubs in the discus with a throw of 88-04, beating out Teipen, who had a throw of 86-07, and Graham, who had a throw of 83-03, with North Putnam’s Olivia Stewart finishing ninth.

Greencastle’s Autumn Shrum finished sixth at the long jump with a distance of 15-0 while North Putnam’s Stewart finished 10th.
