Greencastle bats awaken to bash Brown County; seven not the magic number for county softball teams

Baseball

--Greencastle 21, Brown County 1 (5)__

The Tiger Cub bats, having had a week off, exploded back into life with five runs in the first and fourth innings and eight runs in the second inning Tuesday night.

Ben Huff brought in four runs with a pair of doubles while Keifer Wilson added three more at the plate. Chase Carrington, Treyten Clark, Evan Alexander, Ethan Hamm, Boyd Ensley, John Poulton, Cooper Williams and Wade Hamilton all knocked a run in.

DJ Wells earned a comfortable win on the mound, giving up a hit and an unearned run in three innings, walking three and striking out five. Carrington pitched two innings, giving up a hit and two walks while striking out six.

Cloverdale 5, Sullivan 1

Carrying on the momentum of their big comeback against North Putnam, the Clovers won their second-straight by holding the Golden Arrows scoreless after the first inning Tuesday night.

Levi Hilton, Xavier Evans and Brady Koosman all drove in runs despite Cloverdale only having seven hits for the evening.

Hilton toed the rubber for all seven innings, scattering seven hits and three walks for a single run while striking out six.

Softball

Terre Haute North 19, Greencastle 2 (5)

Brown County 10, Greencastle 1

Seven was not a lucky number for the Tiger Cubs Monday night as the Patriots hit the magic number in the third and fourth innings to solidify a run-rule win.

Sidney Lantz and Allie Beaman knocked in the two Greencastle runs with Elise Lausee and Raigan Chavez each recording a double and a run scored.

Beaman took the loss in the circle, giving up 11 runs, six earned, on nine hits over three innings. Haley Iseman gave up eight runs on five hits and four walks in two innings of work.

The following night, the Eagles put up another seven spot in the second inning to make it a comfortable night in Nashville.

Evelyn Briones drove in the lone Tiger Cub run while Lausee had a pair of doubles.

Briones took the loss, pitching all six inning, giving up 10 runs on eight hits and six walks, striking out six.

North Putnam 15, Indian Creek 4 (6)

With the score tied at 3-3, the Cougars put up crooked numbers across the next three innings to earn a run-rule win over the Braves Tuesday evening.

Brylie Schmitz had four RBIs on the night on a triple and two doubles while Grace Kinkead, Emma Williams, Kyndal Brewer and Lexi Daigle each knocked in two runs each.

Brewer picked up the win, pitching three innings while giving up a run on two hits. Kinkead also tossed three innings, giving up three runs on three hits.

West Vigo 9, South Putnam 1

The Eagles were gashed for seven runs themselves in the fourth inning Wednesday as the Vikings held the visitors to three hits.

Sabrina Leonard drove in the lone South Putnam run while Peyton Freeman had the other two Eagle hits. Leonard also took the loss in the circle, giving up nine runs on even hits and four walks, striking out three across 3 2/3 innings. Ariel Dooley pitched the other 2 1/3 innings, giving up a hit and two walks while striking out two.

Girls’ Tennis

Owen Valley 3, Greencastle 2

The Tiger Cubs had leads on three courts to start Wednesday’s WIC match but only picked up wins on two as Maddie Landry defeated Haley Frank at No. 1 singles 6-3, 6-2 and Sophie Riggle defeated Elizabeth Johnson at No. 3 singles 6-3, 6-4.

Caroline Gooch suffered a setback at No. 2 singles with a 6-1, 6-3 loss to Ines Hidalgo while Liberty Amis and Bella Monnett fell 6-4, 6-1 to Grace Corea and Bre Davis at No 1 doubles.

Savannah Black and Addie Fowler started off the match at No. 2 doubles with a 6-0 win but couldn’t close the match out against Mady Dill and Alex Sartelle, falling 6-4 in the second set and 6-0 in the third set.

Boys’ Golf

Greencastle 165, Northview 169

Vincent Martoglio led the Tiger Cubs with a 39 to earn medalist honors at Forest Park Tuesday afternoon.

Zane Huber and Tyler Rodgers both shot 41 to back Martoglio while Lathen Worman shot 44, Clark Shafer carded a 46 and Dylan Barcus came in on 57.

“Greencastle played consistent golf throughout the match with good ball striking, chipping and putting,” Tiger Cub head coach Stephen Paquin noted. “The course played hard due to long rough and a strong southerly wind.

“We are putting everything together with the toughest part of the season still ahead.”
