North Putnam baseball sweeps Fountain Central; Greencastle splits pack of girls’ tennis matches

VEEDERSBURG — North Putnam picked up a pair of road wins Saturday after defeating Fountain Central 9-8 and 15-7.

In the opening game, the Mustangs tied the game in the sixth after trailing from the third inning on but a play at the plate in the bottom of the seventh ultimately saw the Cougars claim the first win after scoring four runs in the top of the seventh, only to nearly allow the hosts to tie the game again.

With the bases loaded in the seventh, Gunner Burress reached on an error that allowed a run to score before Isaac Thomason and Brayden Monnett forced runs in via a pair of walks. Jaylen Windmiller got the last run in after being hit by a pitch with the bases still loaded.

An error, walk and single allowed Fountain Central to pull a run back and after a hit batsman, the Mustangs has the bases full and a single from Kyle Slinker plated two runs.

Owen Acton went for home to tie the game but was thrown out on a relay from Thomason to Zach Huff to Burress at the plate, ending the game in the favor of the visitors.

Monnett brought in two runs on a 3-for-4 morning at the plate with Huff, Windmiller, Hensley, Burress and Thomason all bringing in a run.

Hensley picked up the win, throwing three innings, giving up five runs, one earned, on five while striking out five. Kovey Jeter took the no-decision, giving up three runs on two hits and three walks while striking out seven over four innings.

Game two started with Fountain Central taking a 7-1 lead after two innings but would not score again and North Putnam, after scoring four runs in the fifth, shut the game down with eight runs in the seventh inning.

Windmiller, Jeter, Brogan Woodall, Doug O’Hair and Kaiden Helderman each drove in a pair of runs in the second game.

Monnett picked up the win, pitching three innings, giving up a hit and a walk with two strike outs. Chase Hutto started the game but was hit hard, allowing six runs on two hits and three walks, only getting one out before Woodall came in and pitched 3 2/3 innings, giving up a run on five hits with four strikeouts.

South Putnam 17, White River Valley 2 (5)

The Eagles scored four runs to start the game and cruised from there, scoring seven runs in the fourth to help ease to a run-rule win over the Wolverines.

Joslyn Pilcher was 3-for-4 with five RBIs while Faith Will drove in three runs, Payton Freeman, Jaicee Jackson and Ariel Dooley plated two runs each and Alexis Phillips, Sabrina Leonard and Chole Pistelli knocked in a run each.

Jackson picked up the win, giving up two hits and two runs over five innings, issuing four walks while striking out seven.

Sullivan 13, North Putnam 1 (5)

The Golden Arrows scored multiple runs in all four innings at the plate as the Cougars fell in five innings Saturday.

Kyla Willis drove in the sole run for the visitors and collected one of the team’s three hits on the day, along with Kyndal Brewer and Emma Williams.

Brewer took the loss, pitching all four innings, giving up 13 runs on 14 hits with a walk and strikeout.

On April 28, the Tiger Cubs suffered a fourth loss in WIC play after falling to the Golden Arrows with Sophie Riggle the lone match winner at No. 3 singles, defeating Brooklyn Coulson 6-2, 6-1.

Maddie Landry and Caroline Gooch lost at No. 1 and 2 singles 6-3, 6-0 to Hannah Burkhart and Paige Chickadaunce respectively. Liberty Amis and Bella Monnett lost at No. 1 doubles 6-4, 6-2 to Ella Kind and Parker Mischler while Savannah Black and Addie Fowler lost 6-0, 6-0 to Sarah Francis and Maggie McCammon at No. 2 doubles.

Last Monday, Greencastle was able to edge the Braves with a sweep of singles matches after Landry defeated Lauren Foster 1-6, 7-6 (8-6), 7-6 (7-3), Gooch defeated Lauren Lewis 6-3, 6-1 and Riggle defeated Zoe Rayback 6-3, 6-4.

Amis and Monnett were beaten 6-4, 6-4 by Olivia Perry and Emilee Scott while Black and Fowler lost 6-0, 6-0 to Avery Burress and Addy Turnell.

Two days later, the Tiger Cubs fell to the Eagles on the road with Gooch defeating Anna Tipton 6-1, 6-2 and Riggle defeating Mattie Satter 7-6 (7-5), 6-4.

Landry lost 6-3, 6-4 to Anna Stogsdill while Amis and Monnett were defeated 6-2, 6-0 by Mary Rygiel and Katie Tipton and Black and Fowler fell 6-2, 6-2 to Julie Birt and Abie Bowman.

The following day, Greencastle beat the Chargers with Landry and Riggle sweeping their matches over Sydney Neidffer and Bella Priddy 6-0, 6-0 while Gooch defeated Paige Hudson 6-1, 6-1 and Black and Fowler defeated Courtney Engle and Shayna Ratcliff 2-6, 7-5, 10-7 (tiebreak).

Amis and Monnett were close but fell to Allison Guard and Sydnee Turner 7-5, 6-4.
