GOSPORT – A complete roster can make a world of difference in the way a team plays.

Greencastle had been shooting competitive scores for most of the boys’ golf season but was just a little bit behind where it wanted to be with Keaton Parmley out of the lineup.

With the sophomore returning in time for Thursday’s Putnam County Golf Match at Oak Ridge GC, the Tiger Cubs kept their scores tight, as they had done in multiple matches during the 2022 season, but followed Parmley’s medalist round of 35 with scoring rounds of 38, 40 and 40 to beat Cloverdale 153-164 with North Putnam third on 205.

Saturday, Greencastle doubled up on tournament wins, returning to the summit of the WIC with a round of 308 to beat Edgewood and the Clovers, second and third respectively with rounds of 323 and 324.

Parmley again led the charge, earning medalist honors with a two-under round of 70 at Rolling Meadows GC with Tyler Rodgers finishing second with an even-par 72.

The key to both rounds was consistency from all five players according to Greencastle head coach Steve Paquin.

“Consistency. That’s the word that I can say about the matches,” Paquin said. “We came over and worked on things (at Oak Ridge), going over the holes so that everybody knew what they were doing and when.

“That was a good team win and it was good to have Keaton back because it takes the heat off those guys. They were consistent without him but the scores were 42s and 43s and we needed that one score to take us down.

“The order we had (Saturday) is the order that they finished, so they were right where they were supposed to be,” Paquin added.

Vincent Martoglio was runner-up to Parmley on Thursday, turning in a round of 38, a stroke ahead of Cloverdale pair Zach Thomas and Max Kaufman, both leading the Clovers with rounds of 39.

Lathan Worman and Zane Huber both shot 40 to finalize the Tiger Cub scoring while Eli Kelley also shot 40 as the two teams claimed all seven All-County spots.

Tyler Rodgers shot 42 for Greencastle’s fifth score, a stroke ahead of North Putnam’s Jayden Simpson and South Putnam’s Brett VanRensselaer on 43.

Noah Betz rounded out the Clovers with a round of 46 with Carson Caulkins coming in on 55.

Behind Simpson for the Cougars was Seth Thompson on 47, Brody Braeger on 55, Barrett Turner on 60 and Shiloh Worth on 63. Nate Ladd, the other Eagle on the course Thursday, shot 57.

Members of the All-County boys' golf team include (left to right) medalist Keaton Parmley, Vincent Martoglio, Zach Thomas, Eli Kelley, Zane Huber, Lathen Worman and Max Kaufman. Parmley, Martoglio, Thomas, Kelley and Kaufman were also All-WIC golfers along with Greencastle's Tyler Rodgers.

Martoglio joined Parmley and Rodgers on the All-WIC team with a round of 82 while Worman shot 84 and Huber 87 to cement Greencastle’s return to the top of the conference table after Northview won in 2021, snapping the Tiger Cubs’ three-year winning streak from 2017 to 2019.

“We had everybody back from last year where they were juniors last year,” Paquin said about the squad reclaiming the conference title. “This year, they were seniors with that experience, along with two sophomores, and we expect them to continue the succession as we go.”

Thomas, Kaufman and Kelley finished third, fourth and sixth at the conference match with rounds of 73, 75 and 79, each earning All-WIC honors. Betz shot 97 and Caulkins 113.

Simpson led North Putnam with a round of 84 with Thompson close behind on 89. Braeger shot 102 while Turner turned in a 110.

Greencastle returns to action Monday and Wednesday at home against Crawfordsville and Owen Valley respectively with North Putnam hosting South Putnam Tuesday and Cloverdale visiting Cascade on Thursday.
