City Council seeking candidates for GCSC school board opening

Russell Harvey

The Greencastle City Council is seeking candidates for one of the two positions to which it appoints members to the Greencastle Community Schools Board of Trustees. The position is a four-year term.

The seat, currently filled by Russell Harvey, will commence on July 1, 2022 and continue until June 30, 2026. Harvey is eligible to seek reappointment.

Applications can be obtained by calling Linda Huber at 765-848-1515 and also via the city’s website at www.cityofgreencastle.com. Candidates must live reside within the city limits of Greencastle.

Completed applications are due at City Hall by 4:30 p.m. Monday, May 31. The application includes instructions for submission via e-mail, drop box or U.S. mail.

In addition to providing name, address, telephone number and email address, the application asks that candidates submit a cover letter accompanied by two letters of recommendation.

Applicants are also asked to answer four questions posed by Council members:

-- What are the greatest strengths you would bring as a member of the Greencastle School Board?

-- What goals would you pursue as a member of the school board?

-- What is the ideal relationship between the school corporation and the City of Greencastle?

-- Is there anything else you would like to share with the members of the City Council about your qualifications for the position?

Candidate interviews with the City Council will be scheduled at a later date. The appointment will be made at the regular meeting of the City Council on Thursday, June 9 (one week earlier than normal due to councilors’ schedule conflicts). Candidates will be contacted regarding interview arrangements following the deadline. Questions may be directed to Councilor Adam Cohen at acohen@cityofgreencastle.com.

Should the city receive more than three applicants, the Council can meet in executive session to narrow the choices to three. Those three candidates must then be interviewed and the decision made in a public meeting.

“The biggest problem traditionally is we don’t get enough applicants,” Cohen said.

The school board seat is one of two representing residents within the city limits of Greencastle on the appointed GCSC board. Brian Cox fills the other seat appointed by the City Council.

The other appointees to the school board are Mike White and Ed Wilson, representing Greencastle Township, and Dale Pierce, Madison Township.

  • Well I'm going to ask again: when is the Greencastle school system going to stop appointing school board members? They need to be elected by the taxpayers and residents of the Greencastle school system! They would get a bigger and more diverse pool of candidates instead of the usual "zombies" that will fall into line and keep the status quo.

  • *

Injecting divisive party politics into school corporation leadership is a profoundly dumb move.

  • We all need to be smarter than the politicians and media and social media that seem to want to divide us. That is a big problem.

  • Actually the individual citizen chooses division. The citizen doesn’t have to follow the media or politicians. They choose to do so.

No matter the political theology, not having an open mind to realize that solutions may exist many places on the realm, to call people evil names that are not accurate because we disagree with them is an individual choice made my the citizen. The willingness to be accepting and respectful in disagreement is a citizen choice.

All of us have preferences but it is us who chooses how we interact and react to those we disagree with. It is each of us who determines if our political theology is more important than practical thinking.

Each of us choose if we are going to be a sheep or not be a sheep.

Each of us determines if we treat people the way we want to be treated or choose to treat others in a way different than how we want to be treated.

    My perspective anyway
