Sheriff’s Office

Putnam County sheriff’s deputies investigated three recent property-damage crashes.

• At 4:37 a.m. on Saturday, Chloe M. Warren, 18, Brazil, was eastbound on U.S. 40 in a 2017 Chevrolet Sonic when she hit a deer.

Deputy Robert Soilleux estimated damage at $5,000-$10,000.

• At 9:46 p.m. on Friday, Matthew C. Terry, 18, Fillmore, was northbound on County Road 750 East in a 2005 GMC Sierra when he failed to negotiate the 90-degree turn onto County Road 250 North.

The truck left the road and struck a tree.

Deputy Soilleux arrived to find two fresh, very long skid marks approaching the point where the truck left the road. A witness also said he had been southbound on 750 when the truck passed him northbound at a high rate of speed. The witness looked in his rear view mirror to see the truck crash into the tree, so he turned around.

The witness said he arrived to find just one male fleeing the scene toward a field. He said he called out to the man to check out his condition. The witness said another vehicle later pulled up, and the driver got in that car, but before they could drive off, first responders began arriving.

The witness said he kept his distance from Terry, as he was confrontational and displayed an open pocket knife.

Soilleux reported that Terry smelled strongly of alcoholic beverage, was slurring his words and was also confrontational to responders. The deputy found Terry’s wallet on the dashboard, as well as two empty shot-sized bottles of Fireball cinnamon whisky and three other full ones.

Terry initially claimed he was the passenger, but later admitted he was driving but had crawled out of the passenger side to hide this fact, saying he had no license and was on probation.

Terry was transported to Hendricks Regional Health-Danville for pain in his ribs, right leg and ankle.

The vehicle was not plated, had no registration and Terry had no license.

He was charged with driving while intoxicated, as well as cited for driving with no insurance, driving with a suspended license and unreasonable speed.

The truck was towed. Soilleux estimated damage at $10,000-$25,000.

• At 8:13 p.m. on Friday, Mark A. Vittetow, 56, Cloverdale, was westbound on U.S. 40 approaching the intersection of County Road 200 South on a 2002 Harley Davidson FLHRCI Road King. Vickie E. O’Hair, 62, Greencastle, was attempting to turn eastbound onto U.S. 40 from 200 South in a 2013 Ford F-150.

Vittetow told Deputy Soilleux the pickup pulled out in front of him suddenly and he attempted an evasive maneuver to avoid it, swerving left into the median where the motorcycle lost traction on the grass, throwing both Mark and his passenger, Mara Vittetow, from the vehicle.

O’Hair told Soilleux that she did not see the motorcycle, only a car turning right. She then proceeded into the intersection and did not see the motorcycle until after it crashed.

Both Mark and Mara Vittetow complained of pain all over. He was taken to the hospital by ambulance, while she was transported by family.

The motorcycle was recovered from the scene by family and friends of the Vittetows.

Soilleux estimated damage at $10,000-$25,000.
