Grease fire damages kitchen in Fillmore home Tuesday
FILLMORE — No injuries have been reported following a grease fire that called three fire departments to Fillmore Tuesday evening.
A box alarm went out at about 9:25 p.m. for a reported structure fire at 302 S. Main St. with occupants inside the home, though they were able to get out. It was specified that the fire was located in the kitchen area.
With the Fillmore Volunteer Fire Department responded with an engine and a tanker, the Floyd Township Volunteer Fire Department did the same while the Greencastle Fire Department came with an engine. The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office and a Putnam County EMS ambulance also responded.
Fillmore Fire Chief Mike Davies told the Banner Graphic at the scene that the fire occurred after water was poured over hot grease. The explosive effect of the water reacting with the grease then caught the cabinets overhead.
The owner, Kathy Sadler, told the Banner Graphic that her son initially smothered the grease fire with a blanket, before putting out the cabinets with a water house.
Davies confirmed the fire itself was out upon arrival and contained to the kitchen, though the home was filled with smoke. As such, firefighters vented the home with a fan. Meanwhile, some overhaul was also performed.
While the home was not a loss, damages from the fire were estimated between $6,000-$10,000.
