Greencastle girls’ tennis reaches regional final; season ended by Terre Haute South

CRAWFORDSVILLE ­— Greencastle battled gallantly between the Crawfordsville High School Tennis courts and the Collete Tennis Center at Wabash College but could not overcome Terre Haute South in the IHSAA Crawfordsville Girls’ Tennis Regional Wednesday, falling 4-1 to the Braves.

Caroline Gooch won the sole point for the Tiger Cubs in the final, coming back from being blanked in the opening set to defeat Samhita Shantharam 0-6, 6-4, (10-6) in a third set super tiebreak at No. 2 singles.

Terre Haute South, which won its 25th girls’ tennis regional title, won handily across the other four courts as Maddie Landry was beaten by Sarah Rowe 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles while Sophie Riggle suffered a 6-0, 6-3 defeat to Briley Ireland at No. 3 singles.

Liberty Amis and Bella Monnett fell 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 doubles to Savannah Semmler and Ayden Zinkovich while Savannah Black and Addison Fowler were beaten 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 doubles by Jodran Miller and Sydney Williams.

The day before, Greencastle swept the singles bouts to reach the regional final with a 3-2 win over the host Athenians.

Gooch and Riggle won tough two-set matches against Reese Minnette and Harmony Taylor respectively, the former a 6-3, 6-4 winner at No. 2 singles and the latter a 6-4, 6-4 winner at No. 3 singles.

Amis and Monnett fell at No. 1 doubles to Lilly Kingbell and Cathleen McGrady 6-2, 6-1 while Black and Fowler lost 6-2, 6-2 to Mia Wagner and Elyse Widmer at No. 2 doubles.

That left Landry and Sarah Rohr to battle it out at No. 1 singles for advancement to the final.

Landry edged out the first set in a tiebreak 7-6 (8-6) before Rohr leveled the match with a quck 6-1 win.

The final set fell Landry’s direction with a 6-3 win that put Greencastle in the regional final.

The Tiger Cubs finished 10-11 for the 2022 season, 2-6 in WIC play and winners of a second-straight sectional title
