Lloyd Paul Hoskins

Lloyd Paul Hoskins, 88, of Reelsville, Indiana, passed away at the Hutson Wood Exceptional Living Center in Brazil on Wednesday, June 1, 2022.

Lloyd was born on May 26, 1934, in Reelsville, the son of Woodrow and Geneva (Butler) Hoskins. At the age of 16, he graduated from Reelsville High School, where he was an exceptional basketball player. Lloyd continued his education at Indiana State Teachers College, earning a master’s degree in education as well as a certificate as a guidance director.

He served his country in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. Lloyd began his civilian career as a teacher at Reelsville High School, where he also coached track and basketball. He left teaching to become an Indiana State Police officer, where he served as a trooper for three years.

Lloyd returned to teaching at Concannon High School as the dean of boys. He left Concannon after eight years to become the first guidance director at South Putnam High School, where he served from 1969 until 1995 when he retired. During his tenure, Lloyd was the sponsor of the National Honor Society, where he taught students to serve others. Throughout his career Lloyd also worked as a farmer, realtor and auctioneer.

Lloyd was a member of the Reelsville United Methodist Church, where he served as a lay speaker. He also served in ministry at the Putnam County Correctional Facility as a Gideon. Lloyd was the chaplain of the Good Sam’s Camping Club “Crossroads 75.”

When he wasn’t working or serving others, Lloyd enjoyed dancing, watching and playing basketball, Carrom and cards. He also enjoyed traveling, camping and spending time with family.

Lloyd was preceded in death by his parents, Woodrow and Geneva Hoskins.

Survivors include his wife Mary, whom he married on Oct. 24, 1953; two childre, Debra Colwell and husband Bart of Terre Haute and Curtis Hoskins and wife Sharon of Greencastle; grandchildren Jessica Colwell (Danny Selby), Rebekah “Abby” Carlton (Jordan), Kimberly Gard, Melissa Ames (Kyle) and Paul Hoskins (Jessie); great-grandchildren Lucas, Lucy, Josie, Jacie, Keaton, Kaylee, Krae, Kamry, Zion, Zoe and Luke; siblings Robert “Bob” Hoskins and Rita Hutcheson; as well as many extended family members and friends.

Visitation will be on Sunday, June 5 from 2-4 p.m. at Lawson-Miller Chapel, 1702 E. National Ave., Brazil. Services will be held at the funeral home on Sunday at 4 p.m. with burial to follow at Boone Hutcheson Cemetery with military rites provided by the United States Army and members of the American Legion and VFW.
