State Road 236 closing Friday near North Salem

NORTH SALEM — State Road 236 will close in both directions on or after Friday, June 10 between North County Line Road 900 East and West Street near North Salem for construction work, the Indiana Department of Transportation has announced

Starting July 19, SR 236 will close between U.S. 231 and Rush Street in Roachdale for additional work in Putnam County.

The official detour follows SR 75 to U.S. 36 to U.S. 231 back to SR 236.

This project was awarded to Milestone Contractors L.P. for $9.1 million. This project will complete a cold in-place recycle and spans from U.S. 231 to just west of SR 75. The section from east of Roachdale to the Hendricks/Putnam County line was completed last year. The portion through the town of Roachdale is nearly complete. Some short-term asphalt paving work through town will be completed under flagging as part of this construction phase.

A cold in-place recycle treatment, a type of resurface similar to a full-depth reclamation, is an environmentally-friendly method of removing and reusing the existing asphalt surface. It involves grinding off the top 2 to 5 inches of asphalt surface and mixing the crushed asphalt with an asphalt recycling agent, and placing git back down with a paver.

This results in a much stronger, stable base for the new road. It also results in less hauling away of materials.

INDOT reminds motorists to use caution and consider worker safety when driving through a construction zone.
