A daily ritual for Scott Weltz took on a bit more poignancy recently, as the Greencastle Middle School principal waved goodbye to students and parents at day’s end for the final time before departing for his new role as Community Schools of Frankfort assistant superintendent.

Scott Weltz has worn a lot of hats in his 17 years at Greencastle Community Schools:

Two years as Greencastle High School athletic director;

Four years as seventh-grade social studies teacher;

Two years as Greencastle Middle School seventh-grade social studies teacher;

Two years as GMS assistant principal;

Three years as district technology integrator;

Finally, the last six years as GMS principal, a position from which the school board recently accepted his resignation.

It’s a plethora of experiences that should serve Weltz as he departs GCSC, having recently accepted the position of assistant superintendent for Community Schools of Frankfort.

“At the time, it probably looked like I was jumping around,” Weltz said. “But now I’m in a situation where all those experiences will help me mentor more people and have a global perspective of the organization.”

This makes sense for Weltz, who said he’s always emphasized relationship building in his professional life.

To me, it’s always been about relationships — building positive relationships with the students, the parents and the staff,” Weltz said. “I think there are some really good people here who can continue that relationship building.”

Reflecting on 17 years at GCSC, the West Chester, Ohio, native allows that Greencastle has had as much impact on him as the other way around.

“You hope when you go someplace and work, that you have an impact and make a difference,” Weltz said. “What I realize is that this place has had an impact and made a difference on me. They raised my kids, kindergarten through 12th grade. They’re my friends. They’re great people here.”

Those people will have the chance to continue impacting the Weltz family, as Scott and wife Annie aren’t looking to move, as son Harris is about to begin his junior year at GHS.

“It’s not fair to uproot him if I have that option,” Weltz said.

Elder Weltz child Zoe graduated from GHS in 2021.

At this point, Weltz said goodbye to his last group of GMS students more than a week ago, but he will continue his role until his contract year is up at the end of June and his term at Frankfort begins June 1.

“Through the process of checking people out, there have been lots of tears and hugs,” Weltz said. I’ve already been through a box of Kleenex on my desk. But I also know there are lots of good things coming.”
