Peter Crary

Peter Crary, DePauw assistant men’s and women’s track and field coach, has been selected as the inaugural Spirit of Tim Hreha Award recipient. The award is in honor of Tim Hreha who came to DePauw as a student-athlete in 1969 and, following graduation, embarked on a coaching and teaching career that included nearly 50 years in various capacities at DePauw until his death in January 2022.

“Peter embodies Tim’s spirit (tenacity, integrity, modesty and pursuit of professional development) in his support of Team DePauw,” DePauw director of athletics Stevie Baker-Watson said. “In coaching our student-athletes, Peter is relentless in his support of student-athletes, both on the track and in life. He is a lifelong learner and has had to teach himself all facets of track and field to support the students. He is modest when accepting praise and his student-athletes frequently cite his support and knowledge for their success. Peter always works with integrity and honesty and treats others with dignity and respect. Following Tim’s passing, Peter took an increased interest in the throwers, looking to fill the gap - physically, mentally and emotionally - for our student-athletes.”

Crary joined the DePauw coaching staff during the 2003-04 academic year and has coached the high jump, pole vault, hurdles and combined events. Among his coaching highlights is coaching two student-athletes to three NCAA Division III All-America honors each. Courtney Lauer earned one all-America certificate in the pentathlon (2011) and two in the heptathlon (2010, 2011), while Erin Pasch did the same in the pentathlon (2022) and in the heptathlon (2021, 2022).

The award will be given annually to at least one individual who serves Team DePauw and embodies Tim’s spirit in their support of DePauw athletics. The honoree will demonstrate tenacity, integrity, modesty (TIM) and a strong commitment to professional development and will be provided an additional $2,500 to be used for professional development for themselves, their staff or the athletics department.
