City Council to make school board pick Wednesday night

Monday, June 13, 2022

The Greencastle City Council is expected to make its decision Wednesday evening on one of two seats its appoints to the Greencastle Community Schools Board of Trustees.

Incumbent Russell Harvey and three other candidates -- Derek Jorgensen, Jennifer Noll and Lee Price -- will be interviewed by members of the Council in a public session beginning at 6 p.m. at City Hall.

Each interview is expected to last about 40 minutes. Candidates not being interviewed at the time will be asked to wait outside or upstairs at City Hall so not to otherwise have unfair advantage by hearing the questions and responses.

Determined randomly, the interview order will be Jorgensen, Noll, Price and Harvey.

Jorgensen, 131 Woods Edge Blvd., is a parent of GCSC students and has been employed at Crown Equipment Corp. for more than 11 years.

Noll, 96 Ridgeland Rd., is a retired local educator with 30 years in the classroom and/or administration.

Price, 1138 Houck Rd., a machinist by trade, is best known as a veteran volunteer firefighter and Madison Township fire chief.

Harvey, 20 N. Gillespie St., is a buyer/planner for Crown Equipment.

The four-year term will commence on July 1, 2022 and continue until June 30, 2026.

The school board seat in question is one of two representing residents within the city limits of Greencastle on the appointed GCSC board. Brian Cox fills the other position appointed by the City Council.

The other appointees to the school board are Mike White and Ed Wilson, representing Greencastle Township, and Dale Pierce, Madison Township.

  • I wonder if the question of how will the board member vote if the choice to adopt the dictate from the White House that public schools will adhere to the open bathrooms and showers, regardless of gender, be asked tonight?

Because, if they don't adhere to this new rule, funding for the school lunch program will be withheld, meaning that the subsidized costs of school lunches and breakfast will necessarily go up.

Since there is no other open forum to ask any questions of these potential public officials, I guess we'll see if that is on the radar for GCSC.
