With Lora Busch on her way out at Area 30 Career Center, its interlocal board of directors approved contracts for both her successor and a new assistant director at its regular meeting Tuesday morning.

With addendums outlined last month and approval by counsel being noted, the board officially approved Chad Nunley’s contract as Area 30’s new executive director. Nunley will come into the role next month after serving as assistant director under Busch for the last 14 years.

Meanwhile, the board also approved a contract for Sharon Bone becoming Area 30’s new assistant director. Bone will be transitioning into the role after serving as director of student services.

Nunley affirmed that Bone’s previous position would be posted, but acknowledged that no one has been identified as being interested yet. It was not specified when Bone’s new contract would be effective.

Summing up her moving on, Busch only noted that Nunley will be leading the board from this point on. In the meantime, she will become the executive director of the Indiana Association of Career & Technical Education Districts.

“That’s it. It’s been a pleasure,” Busch said shortly. “I’ll cry if I say much more, so I’ll leave it at that.”

In other business:

• The board approved transferring $100,000 from Area 30’s education fund to its operations fund.

The board also addressed the following personnel items:

• The board approved hiring Steve Lindley as the instructor for Area 30’s CEO program, which focuses on heavy equipment, and Kaleb Warner as its welding/WIRED program instructor.

Busch noted that Lindley, a North Putnam graduate, will come over from Oregon after running a heavy-equipment business and then earning degrees in economics and history. Meanwhile, Lindley went through both welding and WIRED and has worked in the field since graduating from Vincennes University.

• The board accepted Curtiss Davis’ resignation as the welding/WIRED instructor, which was effective May 25, as well as that of Mike Martellaro as the CEO instructor effective May 31.

Busch noted that Davis will leave for Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology to work as its curriculum designer, having earned advanced degrees since starting out as a sheet metal worker. Meanwhile, Martellaro will return to work for Ascena.

“We’ll miss him (Davis), because he was so interesting and talented, and the kids would walk across fire for him,” Busch commented.

The board also approved the resignation of Alan Zerkel in student services effective May 31. He has served as a mentor to students and staff at Area 30 since 2015. Busch said the position will be absorbed.

• The board approved the termination of Wendell Barrett as a part-time custodian. Nunley said this spot will be filled when school starts back up.

While North Putnam, Greencastle, South Putnam and Eminence superintendents Nicole Allee, Jeff Gibboney, Corey Smith and Wesley Hammond joined Busch and Nunley, Cloverdale Supt. Greg Linton was absent.

The next regular meeting of the Area 30 Board is set for Tuesday, July 12 at 9 a.m. in the Old National Trail boardroom.
