Monday traffic stop ends in driver taking own life
A traffic stop Monday evening ended in the occupant of the vehicle taking his own life.
Around 9:20 p.m. Greencastle Police officers who were investigating an alleged domestic dispute initiated a traffic stop on Washington Street on the south side of Putnam County Courhouse Square.
The driver was the party involved in the dispute.
According to Greencastle Police Chief Tom Sutherlin, officers ordered the man from his vehicle, but he did not comply.
Instead, officers heard a pop from the vehicle consistent with a gunshot.
For their own safety, they did not immediately approach the vehicle. However, once they did, they found a man, the lone occupant of the vehicle, deceased inside.
Due to the nature of this case, neither the Banner Graphic nor police are identifying the subject involved.
A GPD detective is working with the Putnam County Coroner’s Office to investigate the matter.
