CLAYTON – The Greencastle Tiger Cub football team saw a promising early start to the game evaporate quickly at Cascade as the host Cadets scored 43 straight points from late in the first half and forward to end up with a 50-24 victory in Class 2A Sectional 37 play.

“It changed in just a blink of an eye,” Greencastle head coach Matt Helmer said.

The Cubs saw a 17-7 lead dissipate as the Cadets scored to end the first half and then pick up touchdowns on their next five possessions to end Greencastle’s season at 4-6. Cascade will now travel to Sullivan for the semifinal round of the sectional with a 6-4 record.

Greencastle started the game off poorly as it fumbled on the opening kickoff and the Cadets quickly took advantage with a five-play, 57-yard drive on Liam Farmer’s one-yard plunge. Chase Schnarr added the PAT kick and a 7-0 lead for Cascade.

“In a game that there is a lot of running, possessions are critical and we gave away a possession at the beginning of the game,” Helmer said.

Greencastle would answer quickly though. The Cubs took over at their own 26-yard line and methodically moved the ball down the field to score on a fourth-down pass from Chase Carrington to Lamar Moore. Ian Williamson kicked the point after to tie the score at 7-all.

The Tiger Cub defense would rise to the challenge and stop Cascade a yard short on a fake punt attempt on the next possession and then get in position for Williamson to give Greencastle a 10-7 lead on a 27-yard field goal.

Again, Greencastle’s defense would stiffen and hold the Cadets potent offense and force them to turn the ball over on downs for the second straight possession. 68 yards and eight plays later Carrington scored on a 13-yard run and after Williamson kicked the PAT, the Cubs led 17-7 with exactly 1:00 left in the first half.

“We executed and played one of the best halves of football in a while. We moved the ball and stopped them, but lost it a little late in the half,” Helmer said.

The Cadets used up :59.1 of the final minute to drive down the field and score on a Brady Trebley to Toby Savini 17-yard touchdown pass. That score not only cut the Tiger Cub lead to 17-14, but set the tone for the second half.

“I am a believer that momentum is big in football. We had all the momentum and they took it away with that late touchdown,” Helmer said

Cascade would take the opening kickoff of the second half and use up more than half of the third quarter driving down the field and scoring on a Trebley 18-yard pass to Devon Weigle and the Cadets were back on top 22-17 after the two-point conversion run by Marcus Hobson.

Cascade’s defense would shut down the Cubs on the next few possessions and its offense would pick up chunks of yards setting up a Trebley one-yad run and then take advantage of a bad punt snap by the Cubs and get a Toby Savini 24-yard run and the Cadets were cruising up 42-17.

The Cadets would finish their five straight touchdowns run with an electrifying 74-yard pass and run from Trebley to freshman Dayton Mink to put the game out of reach at 50-17 with just over six minutes to play.

“We gave up some big plays, but we really hurt ourselves tonight with mistakes, turnovers and penalties. We have struggled with that this year,” Helmer said of his team turning the ball over three times and giving the Cadets extra opportunities.

Greencastle would answer by putting the final points on the board as Chase Carrington’s career would end with him picking up his second touchdown of the night, this one a 10-yard run to set the final margin at 50-24.

“I thought the seniors really worked. The loss does not diminish their legacy at Greencastle and all they have done for the program,” Helmer said as his seniors would play their final game for the purple and gray.
