Maureen Carkeek

Maureen Carkeek passed away on Dec. 5, 2022, in Greencastle at the age of 96.

She was born in Greensburg on Feb. 8, 1926, the daughter of Roy and Mildred (Owens) McCormick.

She grew up in Wellington, Ohio, and attended the DePauw University School of Music to study organ. It was here that she met and married Arthur Carkeek in 1947.

Following graduation, Maureen completed a master’s degree in music at Union Theological Seminary in New York City. She returned to DePauw in 1950 and taught piano and organ in the School of Music and piano in the preparatory program for over 70 years. She never tired of teaching. During her career she had several original compositions published.

Maureen spent her summers on Lake Michigan in South Haven, Mich., where she received many Greencastle visitors for over 40 years. She loved entertaining and hosted a legendary New Year’s Eve Party annually. An avid reader, she read three or four books a week in her later years.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Arthur.

She is survived by daughter, Janet Carkeek (David Helm) of Omaha, Neb.; son David Carkeek (Kumiko Ogawa) of Saratoga, Calif.; and two grandchildren, James Helm of New York City and Amy Carkeek of Tokyo, Japan.

Funeral services for Maureen are set for 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 27 at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 520 E. Seminary St., Greencastle.
