Closing the 2022-23 girls’ basketball regular season against South Vermillion, Greencastle was looking for two things to happen Thursday night.

The first was when Gloria Brewer set the school’s all-time single season scoring record and to get through the night with no injuries ahead of sectional play, both being accomplished in a 63-12 win.

“We wanted to come through tonight injury-free and that happened,” Greencastle head coach Doug Greenlee said. “It was a different style of game, a different pace of game and we got through it.

“We’re moving forward and as we told the girls, it was a tremendous regular season but it’s starting over and we’re 0-0 right now. We need to focus and get ready for sectionals.”

The Tiger Cubs (19-4) started off by scoring the first 17 points of the game and led 18-1 at the end of the first quarter, the final point being a Brewer free throw that tied the single-season record held by Laura Ledbetter (Branagin).

Brewer eventually took sole possession midway through the second quarter with a three, marking the fourth record the senior had collected this season, including the single-game scoring record and single-season marks for rebounds and steals.

“It’s quite an accomplishment,” Greenlee said about Brewer’s season-long efforts. “She’d be the first to tell you that the credit would go to her teammates in helping her in those areas.

“It’s a tribute to her work ethic that she not only set the scoring mark but also holds the rebounding and steal records.”

With the Wildcats (0-23) totally overwhelmed, the hosts eventually built up a 40-1 lead at halftime, not allowing a point in the second quarter and ensuring a running clock for the second half.

All but one Greencastle player would get a basket by the end of the night as the third quarter ended at 58-9, South Vermillion getting its first field goal with 4:10 left in the quarter, and the last basket of the night would be notable as Stephanie Morales hit a three for the first time in her career.

Brewer finished the night with 22 points, sitting at 574 for the season, while fellow seniors Emma Hunter had 16 points and Morales finished with five points.

The Tiger Cubs turn their full attention to sectional play starting Tuesday with a rematch against Southmont, one the Mounties won in the opening game of the season for both teams 40-37, though with one rather large caveat in Brewer not being eligible to play at the time due to a lack of practices.
