Brian David Helton

The world lost a hero on March 10, 2023, with the passing of Brian David Helton at the age of 42. He was surrounded by his loving family as he passed.

Brian was born on May 1, 1980, and was a beloved son, brother, father and friend.

Brian was a talented athlete, excelling in swimming and soccer at North Putnam High School, where he graduated in 1998. After high school, he attended IUPUI on a swimming scholarship, setting several school records and serving as the swim team captain. Brian was also an accomplished rugby player. He was the captain of Whitewater men’s rugby team and competed in the 2001 World Police and Fire Games. He was widely admired for his strong work ethic and natural leadership abilities.

Brian served with the Indianapolis Fire Department for 18 years, where he was a member of the ambulance, engine, ladder and dive teams. His bravery, selflessness and unwavering commitment to serving others made him an inspiration to his colleagues and the community. His homemade soups were a favorite among his fellow firefighters, and his culinary skills were just one of the many ways he made a positive impact on those around him.

Outside of work, Brian had a love for nature and animals. He was a devoted father of three, always putting his children first and cherishing every moment he spent with them.

Brian will be deeply missed by his children, Hudson Olivia Helton, Sawyer Grace Helton and Atticus David Helton. In addition to his children, he is survived by his mother, Marla Helton (Stuart Fabe), as well as his brother, Chris Helton, (Elizabeth Zyer) and former spouse Jessica Helton.

Brian was preceded in death by his father, Charles David Helton.

A celebration of Brian’s life will be held at Union Hall, located at 748 Massachusetts Ave., Indianapolis, on Saturday, April 15 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Attendees are welcome to bring photographs or any special thoughts they would like to share with Brian’s family. These items will be cherished by his children as a lasting tribute to their beloved father and his impact on the world.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to either the Putnam County Humane Society, located at 4700 E. State Rd. 240, Greencastle, or to Wounded Warrior Project in Brian’s memory.

Brian will be remembered as a true hero, who helped others through his kind, selfless and courageous acts. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him, and his legacy will live on through his children and the impact he made on the people around him.
