FISHERS – Allie Landry’s run in the IHSAA Girls’ Tennis Individual State Tournament fell one match short of the state finals Saturday as the Greencastle freshman competed at the Fishers Girl’s Tennis Individual Regional.

Landry defeated Southport’s Carlie Streit 6-2, 6-1 in the morning session but fell to Lawrence North’s Isabelle May 6-1, 6-0 in the championship match.

Streit provided a powerful, if inconsistent, forehand shot that kept Landry on her toes throughout the first set though Landry’s consistency around the court proved to be the difference in the match.

Unable to get the forehand over the net, along with struggling with first serves, Streit steadily fell behind and was forced into easing shots over the net which Landry was able to take advantage of, producing multiple winners to win the opening match in just over an hour.

“The morning session went really well,” Landry said. “I was able to stay consistently and didn’t let (Streit) come back in the second set.

“She hit a lot of hard shots that were winners but as long as I kept the ball alive long enough, eventually she would miss.”

“Allie made good adjustments keeping the ball higher on the back court and (Streit) had difficulty handling that stroke as Allie kept her moving on the baseline,” Greencastle head coach Anette Munoz said. “It was nice to see Allie with good placement, as she always does.”

May defeated Avon’s Hanan Awale 6-0, 6-1 in the other match of the morning session and continued her strong play by defeating Landry 6-1, 6-0 to advance to the IHSAA Girls’ Tennis Individual State Finals at Park Tudor starting Friday.

Landry finishes the season with a 22-2 record at No. 1 singles while Greencastle as a whole finished 19-3 on the season.

“Allie played a competitive match for her last match of the season,” Munoz said. “She came out strong, winning the first game.

“There were many close games after that, but they did not end in Allie’s favor. I was impressed watching Allie play. She kept up with the pace of play, but the length of rallies and some angles of shots were not what she had to play against all season.

“Allie ended in the top-16 for the individual tournament,” Munoz noted. “As a freshman, that is outstanding.

“I can’t wait to see all Allie accomplishes over the next three years. We are all so proud of her.”

May will face former state champion Molly Bellia of team state runner-up South Bend St. Joseph in the opening round. Bellia won the individual singles title two years ago but was eliminated in the opening round of the state finals a year ago.
