Tiger Cubs double down on Mustangs in WIC soccer sweep

Thursday, September 21, 2023

The Greencastle Tiger Cub soccer teams were dominant in a sweep of the Edgewood Mustangs Thursday night at Harbison Stadium.

Four goals from Micah Foss paced the boys to a 5-0 victory while a hat trick from Evie Briones and a pair of goals from Ali Dobbs gave the girls a 6-1 victory.

The boys were up first and controlled the game from the start, dominating the time of possession and worked to free up the offense.

The first goal came at the 31-minute mark when striker Foss caught the Edgewood goalkeeper out of position and sent one home to make it 1-0.

Edgewood kept it close until late in the first half when Jalen Hardman scored off a nice assist from Foss to make it 2-0 with just over six minutes left.

Foss would add another goal with a minute left, breaking loose and finding the back of the net for a 3-0 halftime advantage.

The second half was much the same as the Tiger Cub midfield did a great job of passing through the mid and creating multiple opportunities, getting 28 shots off on the night, 21 of them on goal.

Foss would add two more to his total on the season in the second half. The first was set up by Sam White for a pretty header past the keeper and for the second, Milyn Tucker found Foss for his fourth of the night.

A five-goal lead that would hold up as the Cubs finished up 7-1 and runners-up to North Putnam in the WIC.

“We dominated possession. If we can keep the ball and frustrate other teams, that’s the 12th man. I think this was our best passing game we played all season. Everyone was clicking tonight,” Greencastle coach JD Sims said.

Greencastle is now 11-2-1 on the season with two games remaining until the postseason with South Vermillion at home and a trip to Terre Haute North still to go.

It was much the same on the girls’ side on senior night. The first goal belonged to Evie Briones as the senior recorded a hat trick with the first three goals of the game

Once settled in, Greencastle carried the pace of play. Briones’ first goal came with 22:11 left, finding paydirt. She would sneak one through the arms of the keeper six minutes later and number three came from a penalty kick after a Cub was fouled in the box. Briones stepped up and ripped one past for a 3-0 advantage.

Fellow senior Riley Wainman got one on the board before halftime, gaining the ball after a corner and placed it in the back of the net for a 4-0 halftime advantage.

In the second half Ali Dobbs got into the act. After a beautiful cross from Aleeyah Johnson, Dobbs wasted no time in hitting it home.

Six minutes later, a long pass and a good bounce put Dobbs on a breakaway and once again struck gold for a 6-0 lead.

The Mustangs would add a late goal from Emma Edwards with a little over a minute left, but too little, too late.

“Coming off the Tuesday loss to Monrovia, we had a pretty intense practice. Everybody responded, they knew we had to set the tone,” said coach Scott Monnett.

The Cubs are still in the hunt for a WIC title, currently tied with Northview and West Vigo. They will have a tune-up against South Vermillion, before closing out the season with North Putnam.

“A little help from Owen Valley and from Edgewood would be great,” added coach Monnett.
