The South Putnam boys' swimming team looked sharp in its first meet of the season Tuesday, defeating Tri-West and Indianapolis Cardinal Ritter in a three-way meet.
"I am very pleased with the boys' performance," South Putnam Coach Windi Hornsby said. "They really shocked me. I wasn't expecting anything bad, but they were miles ahead of the other teams."
The Eagles were paced by Cory McCallie winning both the 100-yard butterfly and 200-yard individual medley. McCallie also teamed with Brice Johnson, Danny Huber and Loren Ashcraft to win the individual medley relay with a time of 2:01.13.
Other winners included freshman Clark Becker winning the 100-yard freestyle, while Johnson won the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:17.95.
The 400-freestyle relay team of Becker, Tyler Thompson, Pruitt and Huber also were victorious with a time of 420:42.
"Our 400 relay was amazing," Hornsby said. "They just really pumped it up."
In diving, senior Adam McCullough placed first with a score of 164.70, while Jon Weaver placed second with a score of 154.70.
The girls' placed second in the meet, while Tri-West placed first.
After a tough opening meet loss to Greencastle last week, Hornsby was pleased with the team's improvement.
"The girls did really well," she said. "It was especially nice after the meet with Greencastle last week."
Leading the girls' team was Janaye Asher winning the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:22.78. Shelby Johnson won the diving competition with a score of 171.65.
Despite some solid performances in the water, Hornsby knows her team is capable of more.
"I really need to see my girls kick it up a little," she said. "I want to see a little fight in them, and I'm not sure what it's going to take to do that."
The South Putnam girls' team hits the pool again Monday when it hosts Danville at 5:30 p.m., while the boys' team hosts Greencastle Thursday at 6 p.m.
In the meantime, both teams will be working to make their respective teams stronger.
"There are some technique issues I really want to work on with them," Hornsby said. "I just feel like if they can get these things down, it's really going to improve times by a couple seconds."
The team scores were not available at press time.
