GMS captures conference title
GREENCASTLE -- The boys seventh grade basketball team made it a perfect 5-0 in the West Central Conference and captured the title with a 31-20 win over the Monrovia Bulldogs.
The host Tiger Cubs jumped out to a first quarter lead, then extended that advantage to a 16-11 score going into half time. Greencastle built on its lead early in the third quarter, but then the visiting Bulldogs reeled off six unanswered points to close the gap to one point, 18-17.
The Tiger Cubs called timeout to regroup, then went on a run of their own to close out the quarter, 23-17.
Greencastle's pressure defense held Monrovia to just three points in the final stanza to complete the 11-point margin of victory.
The Tiger Cubs were led in scoring by Brayden White with 11 points. Jacob Sanders, Zach Wilkerson and Cole Edgar all had four points each. Jacob Sanders also pulled down six rebounds and Ryan Coble had four assists and three steals in the contest.
The Tiger Cubs end the regular season at 11-4. They will next compete in the Putnam County Tournament Thursday at Cloverdale. The tourney begins at 6 p.m.
