Child Abuse Prevention Month to kick off a week early

Thursday, March 21, 2013

While Child Abuse Prevention Month does not officially kick off until Monday, April 1, organizers saw a unique opportunity in organizing some activities a week early.

With spring break the final week of March for all county school corporations, a number of free events are planned for the days off as a way to bring families together.

The executive director of Putnam County Family Support services said strengthening families through time spent together is one of the keys to prevention.

"Child abuse prevention isn't about getting out all the gory details (of child abuse)," Cari Cox said, "it's about supporting families and communities."

To this end, each day next week when the kids would normally be at school, there will be free family events designed to get them out of the house, enjoying one another's company.

Monday will feature a pair of events, beginning with a free screening of "Oz the Great and Powerful" at 1 p.m. at Ashley Square Cinema.

Later on Monday, the Putnam County Public Library will host a free Dr. Seuss Party from 5-7 p.m.

Like most Tuesdays, there will be Tot's Time free child care at Gobin United Methodist Church from 9 a.m.-noon. For information, call 653-9780.

Also on Tuesday, A 'n' J Bowl will host free bowling from 11 a.m.-2 p.m.

Wednesday's free activity will be Mommy & Me at Robe-Ann Park Shelter No. 1 from 12:30-2:30 p.m.

On Thursday, Red Barn Farms at 4409 S. CR 25 West will host a free hands-on experience from 1-3 p.m.

Finally, from 1-3 p.m. on Friday, the Putnam County Museum will host free rock painting.

Child Abuse Prevention Month will officially begin on Monday, April 1 with the signing of a child abuse proclamation at noon at Greencastle City Hall.

A number of events are planned throughout the month of April. More details will be available in an upcoming edition of the Banner Graphic.
