Friday, May 3, 2013

The South Putnam softball team keeps on winning. The Eagles beat visiting West Vigo 11-1 in six innings on Thursday and have now won five straight.

Senior Jenna Jones and freshman Katie Hewitt have helped carry the offense all season, and that continued against the Vikings.

Jones was 2-for-3 with a home run and four RBIs and Hewitt was 3-for-4 with two RBIs.

The Eagles (12-4, 6-2 WCC) opened the scoring in the first and took a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the second inning.

Junior Brooke Cundiff got things started for the Eagles with a two-out base hit to right. Senior Mattie Varvel drew a walk, then senior Kelsey Whitaker knocked Cundiff in was a single to left.

Varvel and Whitaker each stole bases to leave one open for Jones, but the Vikings let her swing away. She took a 2-0 pitch over the fence to break the game open.

West Vigo strung a few base hits together in the fourth to get one the scoreboard, but sophomore pitcher Ashlee Gibson was in control for the Eagles throughout the day.

Gibson gave up just three hits in six innings. She had one strike out, one walk and two hit batters.

The Eagles scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth, then wrapped the game up in the sixth.

Jones singled to lead off the inning, junior Kenzie Trisler, 1-for-4 on the day, doubled. Hewitt also hit a double to score Jones, but Trisler stopped at third.

Senior Janet Crafton, 2-for-3 with an RBI, ended the game with a walk-off suicide fly to left field.

Nikki York hit doubled and had an RBI and Varvel had a triple to start the game and scored two runs.

The Eagles take on county-rival Greencastle on Monday at Tuesday. Monday's game is at SPHS at 5 p.m.
