When Greencastle senior Colleen Weatherford took the baton in the last leg of the 4x400 relay at Tuesday's Putnam County Meet, she trailed first-place Cloverdale by nearly 40 meters.

It was a familiar position for Weatherford. The Tiger Cubs were trailing the Clovers by 70 meters when her anchor leg began in the 4x800. Her 2:13 split allowed the team to win that race by seven seconds.

The gap was too much to overcome in the 4x400, though Weatherford made it close, but Greencastle still won the meet with 76.5 points, beating out second-place Cloverdale's 62.

South Putnam, 61, finished third and North Putnam, 34.5, was fourth.

In all, the Tiger Cubs won seven events. Weatherford finished first in the 400 and set a meet-record in the 800 with a time of 2:18.81, more than five seconds slower than her relay split.

Freshman Kat King was county champ at both the 100- and 200-meter dashes, senior Kayla Cash won the 1600 and the 4x100 relay team of Bailey Lausee, Erica Hoagland, Carissa Johnson and King won.

It was the 14th straight county championship for the Tiger Cubs, who came into the meet having only competed twice so far this year.

GHS has competed in limited meets because of weather problems.

Cloverdale's second-place finish came as a result of fielding competitive athletes in every event. Cloverdale placed at least one girl in the top-three of 12 events and won two -- the 3200 and the 4x400.

Senior Claudia Monnett was the two-mile champ, finishing at 12:56, and the 4x400 team of Bailee Stevens, Riley Canfield, Paige Gruener and Amillia Nally finished at 4:24.44, 0.40 seconds ahead of second place.

South Putnam won four total events in its third-place effort.

Sophomore Ariel Higgins swept the 100- and 300-meter hurdles, sophomore Deborah Cheatham won the high jump and senior Leanna Masters won discus.

North Putnam pulled out wins in three field events but the runners couldn't keep up the same pace.

Senior Sam Lucas won the shot put at 36-feet, 3-inches, improving from last year's second-place finish, and senior Audrey Healy won the long jump at 15-8 1/2. Healy also finished second last year. Her distance was tied with Greencastle's Carissa Johnson, but Healy needed fewer attempts.

Cougars' sophomore Kayla Clodfelter was county pole vault champion.

The Eagles will also host Friday's West Central Conference meet, which begins at 5 p.m.
