Schneider to address Common Core issue at Defenders of Liberty meeting

Friday, May 10, 2013

Indiana District 30 State Sen. Scott Schneider (R-Indianapolis) will be the featured speaker Monday, May 13 at the Greencastle Defenders of Liberty's monthly meeting at the Dixie Chopper Business Center at the Putnam County Airport, 102 Ballard Lane, Greencastle.

The 6:30 p.m. meeting is open to the public.

Legislation authored by Sen. Schneider (SB 193) suspending Indiana's implementation of Common Core State Standards passed the Senate Education and Career Development Committee by a 7-4 vote on Feb. 13.

On April 10, the full Senate passed legislation to halt further implementation of the Common Core State Standards until public meetings are held to study the issue further. The bill also calls for the Office of Management and Budget to conduct analysis of costs associated with implementing Common Core in Indiana.

With the assistance of House Rep. Rhonda Rhoads, the bill was made into an amendment to the Education Bill, HB 1427, and passed on the final day of session. House Bill 1427 is now on the desk of Gov. Mike Pence for his signature.

Sen. Schneider was elected in 2009 and re-elected in 2011. He is a member of the Education and Career Development Committee, Environmental Affairs, and Pensions and Labor.

All interested citizens are invited to attend Monday's meeting to meet Sen. Schneider, especially those who are concerned about the future of education in Indiana and the U.S.
