CARMEL -- The South Putnam softball team lost an emotional game on Saturday and was unable to regain momentum on Tuesday. The Eagles lost at Carmel 10-8.

Senior Mattie Varvel had three hits and an RBI for the Eagles, but she came on in relief of starter Ashlee Gibson and picked up the loss.

The Eagles (14-6) led 8-6 going into the bottom of the sixth inning when Carmel got a grand slam home run to take the lead.

Gibson started and pitched the first four innings before giving way to Varvel.

Senior Nikki York and freshman Katie Hewitt each had two hits for the Eagles. Brooke Cundiff, Gibson, Kenzie Trisler and Jenna Jones each had one.

SPHS returns to action on Thursday when it hosts Terre Haute North on senior night. The game begins at 5 p.m.
